From the outside, it looks defiant with watchtowers, gates, drawbridges and the impressive city wall. Inside the walls, you can stroll through the narrow, flourishing alleyways with narrow staircases and old half-timbered houses. Make yourself comfortable in one of the many cafés and enjoy your first evening on Gotland.
Get ready for the first stage of your cycling tour around Gotland. Cycling northwards, mostly close to the coast, you will soon reach Lummelunda. The 400 million year old cave, also known as the Robbers' Den, can be visited here on a guided tour (not included). Rauks, bizarre limestone pillars, can be found all over Gotland. You can marvel at Jungfrun, the highest rauk on the island at 27 meters, on the very first stage. The cycle tour ends today in Kappelshamn, then a transfer takes you to the Island of Fårö, which is only separated from Gotland by a narrow sound.
You start the day with a round trip on Fårö. Some of the impressive rocket trees can be found on the island in the Langhammars Nature Reserve. Before you continue your cycling tour around Gotland, it is worth visiting the Bergman Center. The museum is dedicated to the famous director Ingmar Bergman, who lived on Fårö for many years. If you are interested in rural life on Gotland in past centuries, plan your next stop at the cultural-historical Bunge Open-Air Museum. Then cycle on to Slite, your destination for today. The town is characterized by tourism, but also by cement production. Slite is home to one of the largest cement plants in Northern Europe.
Today's stage of the cycling tour takes you to the east of Gotland. The region is characterized by extensive sandy beaches, rocket areas and small picturesque villages. One of the most beautiful is Grynge, a well-preserved fishing village from the 18th and 19th centuries. Time seems to have stood still here. Let yourself be enchanted by the unique backdrop of the Gotland way of life. The destination of this stage is Ljugarn, Gotland's oldest seaside resort.
Bike your way through the south of Gotland today. The landscape is varied and beautiful. If you want to reach the southern tip, you will have to cycle 50 extra kilometers. You will be rewarded in the Husrygg nature reserve with the Hoburgsgubben, a rock formation in the shape of an old man's head. You continue to Burgsvik with a wonderful view of the sea. The main town in the south of Gotland has 335 inhabitants. Make yourself at home in one of the beautifully situated restaurants.
Today your cycling tour on Gotland takes you to the west coast. The small coastal road along the Ekstakusten meanders along endless pebble beaches to Djupvik. From here you have a wonderful view of the offshore islands. Your destination today is Klintehamn, a lively harbour town. Here you can experience everyday island life. Barges and cutters sail incessantly in all directions. If you wish, you can take an excursion boat (not included) to the uninhabited island of Lilla Karlsö and observe the numerous bird species.
Impressive rocky coasts and beautiful sandy beaches alternate on today's stage of your cycling tour around Gotland. In Tofta, it's worth taking a break and cooling off in the refreshing sea; the beach is considered one of the longest and most beautiful beaches on Gotland. The most exciting part of the cliff coast can be found in the Högklint nature reserve. From a height of almost 46 meters, you have a spectacular view of the sea and Visby, which is not far away.
