The Werra has its source in the Thuringian Forest near Rennsteig path and meanders through the Thuringian-Hessian border region until it joins the Fulda in Hann. Münden in Lower Saxony. Having disappeared for decades into the border zone or restricted area, many natural and cultural monuments await discovery on the Werra Cycle Route. Take a leisurely cycle through the green heart of Germany. On your way, you will visit charming villages with beautiful old towns and small industrial towns with an eventful history before the Werra and Fulda join to form the Weser. Legend has it that Alexander von Humboldt proclaimed Hann. Münden to be one of the seven most beautifully situated towns in the world.
The city has an illustrious history as the residence of the Ernestine dukes. Buildings such as the castle and the theater bear witness to this. Meiningen is also well-known to railroad enthusiasts, as the railroad depot here has its own company specializing in the maintenance of steam locomotives for clubs and museums throughout Europe.
Between the south-western slope of the Thuringian Forest and the northern slope of Vordere Rhön, you will reach Bad Salzungen today. Enjoy a stroll through the historic town center, but also plan enough time for a visit to Keltenbad. With its graduation tower, it is the oldest spa in Germany and offers spa and wellness facilities as well as a modern bathing and sauna area.
Soon after the start, you should get off your bike again, because the Erlebnisbergwerk Merkers (an adventure mine) is waiting to take you underground. In Philippsthal, a museum provides information about the former East-West-German border, and near Heringen you will notice Monte Kali, a huge mountain of overburden.
You cycle to Untersuhl, where there is one of the few medieval round churches. In Hörschel, you leave the Werra valley to reach your destination for the day, Eisenach. The famous Wartburg Castle awaits you, where European history was written. Lutherhaus and Bachhaus are interesting museums, as is Automobile Welt, which is dedicated to the Eisenach engine works and its vehicles.
You cycle to Creuzburg with its interesting castle complex and ancient stone bridge. Continue to Treffurt with its many old half-timbered houses and Wanfried, once the terminus of the Weser/Werra shipping route. The final destination is Eschwege, which was impressively rebuilt after being completely destroyed by Habsburg Croats during the 30 Years' War.
The first stop today is Bad Sooden, an old salt and spa town. There is also an old graduation house here, a salt inhalatorium. The tour continues to the beautiful Kirschenstadt (cherry town) of Witzenhausen, home to such amazing facilities as the Institute for Tropical Agriculture. After a short refreshment stop at the Letzter Heller bar (not included), you will travel to Hann. Münden. End the day with a stroll through the atmospheric old town and the old harbour.
