Your weekend cycling tour along the Moselle begins in Trier. It is known as Germany's oldest city founded by the Romans over two millennia ago. As such Trier offers a wealth of historical landmarks, including the iconic Porta Nigra (Black Gate), testament to the city's Roman past. This remarkable structure serves as an excellent starting point for discovering Trier’s heritage. Explore the Imperial Baths, the Roman Bridge, the amphitheatre, Trier Cathedral, the Karl Marx House, and much more, as you immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of this time-honoured city.
Today, your journey follows the winding Moselle, beginning in Neumagen-Dhron, Germany's oldest wine-growing village. Once a Roman fort and port, the town still preserves traces of its ancient past, including the Neumagener Weinschiff – a wooden replica of a Roman wine transport ship, moored in the town centre as a testament to its heritage.
Continuing on, you’ll reach Piesport, a renowned wine village. Here you will also find a Roman wine press. Next, you’ll pass Bernkastel-Kues, a picturesque town with narrow, winding streets and colourful half-timbered houses.
Before reaching your destination for the day, Zeltingen, take a detour to the ruins of Landshut Castle, perched high above the town. From here, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Moselle Valley—an unforgettable way to end your ride.
Today, you will tackle the longest stage of your weekend cycling tour along the Moselle. There are but a few gentle climbs along the route so you can expect to make good time. Take the time for a break in Traben-Trarbach. This picturesque town, with its charming half-timbered houses and elegant Art Nouveau villas, boasts one of the most beautiful riverside promenades along the Moselle.
As you continue, you'll reach Zell. Here the Moselle forms its narrowest loop. It is the largest wine-growing community in Germany, with over four million vines lining the slopes. Your journey then leads you via Cochem to Treis-Karden, a quaint town famous for its stunning Moseldom.
The final stage of your Moselle weekend cycling tour begins with a detour to Eltz Castle, one of Germany's most stunning castles. Afterward, continue your ride to Koblenz, where the Moselle meets the Rhine. With over 2,000 years of history, the city is home to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, easily accessible by cable car. Your tour concludes in the afternoon, with options to depart directly, return to Trier independently, or extend your stay in Koblenz with an extra night. A return transfer can also be arranged.
