Cycling vacations along the Tuscan Coast: Your gaze sweeps over the glittering waves of the sea, you cycle through shadowy forests and green, slightly hilly landscapes. Winding mountain roads with postcard-like panoramas, villages and towns where time seems to move at a different pace and countless architectural masterpieces are the constant companions of your bike tour. You can sweeten your breaks with a gelato on the beach or a delicious espresso in the village's only bar. In the evening, reward yourself with a full-bodied wine and regional specialties that are unique in all of Europe. The towels and swimming trunks always ready to hand in the pannier – this is also what a cycling vacation along the Tuscan coast and on Elba stands for. Between Livorno and Piombino there are numerous secluded beaches in narrow bays, but also impressive cliffs and long sandy beaches that shine white as in the Caribbean Sea.
Un caloroso benvenuto – a warm welcome to Tuscany! Pisa is the perfect starting point for your cycling vacation along the beautiful Tuscan coast. Your journey begins with a visit to the iconic Piazza dei Miracoli, where you can marvel at the magnificent Duomo, the Baptistery, and the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. While many tourists only visit those three landmarks, a stroll through the winding streets reveals the true charm of Pisa. The city retains its original character, with buildings painted in the signature yellow hue, a reminder of its prosperous history as a bustling port city.
The destination of your first cycling stage at the tuscan coast is, of course, the Mediterranean Sea.
You’ll cycle through the Macchia Lucchese nature park, one of the few untouched coastal areas near Pisa. Your journey will lead you to the stylish seaside resort of Viareggio, known for its long sandy beaches, palm-lined promenades, and beautiful villas along the shore. The city once attracted the art scene with its vibrant beach resorts and colorful nightlife. Be sure to indulge in a refreshing gelato by the beach, and after a relaxing dip in the salty waves of the Mediterranean, take the train back to Pisa.
The train will take you to the coast of Livorno, a historic port city.
Cycling along the waterfront promenade, you’ll breathe in the refreshing sea air as you pass elegant Belle Époque villas. As you venture into the hinterland, a long climb through the Monti Livornesi nature park awaits. The ascent may be challenging, but the breathtaking views that unfold afterwards make it all worthwhile: rolling green hills, charming Tuscan villages, and a stunning panorama of the sea. You’ll spend the night in a picturesque village perched on a cliff, above the sea.
Don't forget your swimwear, as today you'll be cycling to the renowned sandy beaches of Vada. This stretch of the Tuscan coast feels almost like the Caribbean, with its soft, fine sand and crystal-clear waters. The next highlight of your ride takes you through the picturesque wine region of Bolgheri, famous for producing some of the finest red wines in Tuscany. The local winemakers are true artisans of their craft, and you’ll have the chance to savor a glass of their exceptional wine in the evening. As you continue, the iconic cypress avenues will guide you to Marina di Castagneto, where you’ll end your day.
This stage of your cycling vacation at the Tuscan coast begins with a steep ascent to the medieval town of Castagneto Carducci. Its cobblestone streets, stone houses, and imposing castle speak of centuries of history. After exploring, you'll cycle along a winding high road through ancient cork oak forests, enjoying the tranquility of this timeless landscape. As you descend, let your bike glide through olive groves towards the coast. The long, sandy beach at Golfo di Baratti is framed by gnarled pine trees, offering a perfect spot to relax. Spend several hours bathing and unwinding in this stunning bay before heading to Piombino, just a few kilometers away.
By ship, you'll depart from the bustling port of Piombino, embarking on a scenic crossing to Portoferraio on the Island of Elba. As you sail, take in the breathtaking views of the Tuscan coastline. Throughout your cycling vacation, you've experienced the diverse beauty of the Tuscan coast, and now it's time to discover the charm of Elba. A small but historic island, Elba was famously the site of Napoleon’s exile for a brief year. On arrival, you can choose to spend the day cycling along the panoramic coastal roads, stopping for refreshing swims along the way. Alternatively, you may prefer to explore the island’s hilly interior.
Unfortunately, today marks the end of your cycling vacation along the Tuscan Coast. If you're not ready to leave just yet or would like to extend your stay on the beautiful island of Elba, we would be happy to arrange an extra night in Piombino. Enjoy one more day of coastal beauty or island charm before you bid farewell to this stunning part of Italy.
