Travel report: A classic trip around Lake Constance

From our guests Ruth and Michael

The classic Lake Constance bike tour was the third cycle tour we booked with Radweg-Reisen. Once again, our expectations were exceeded.

Starting in Constance, we cycled clockwise around Lake Constance via the stops in Gailingen, Überlingen, Kressbronn, Höchst (AUT) and back to Constance.

The journey was easy by train. In Constance, we first checked into the hotel. The "Kurkarte" allowed us a free bus ride to the Radweg-Reisen headquarters, where we picked up our bikes.

There was a detailed handover with helpful tips. We had decided to take normal bikes ("organic bikes") without electric drive. There are plenty of tour reports around Lake Constance, so we won't provide detailed descriptions here.

To complete the tour, Radweg-Reisen provided us with GPX files, which we loaded into the Komoot app. This meant that we knew the route in detail beforehand.

Komoot navigated us safely on our tour using this data. We thought it was flat around Lake Constance... On the very first day, we discovered that there were gradients of 8% and major differences in altitude to overcome. This was announced in Komoot as a moderately difficult tour.

Although we didn't have e-bikes, this was manageable with a little effort and pushing the bike. A small consolation: the other Komoot difficulty classifications were mostly "easy".

Note that there are sections of the route that lead onto main roads (approx. 4 km), which is not so great for cyclists. The rest of the route was a good mix of cycle paths and side roads.

Riding a bike around Lake Constance at the weekend was not a good idea. Road cyclists, e-bike riders, bio-bike cyclists and pedestrians share the paths. This situation was not relaxing for us. We therefore recommend making a stopover over the weekend and doing something else (e.g. cycling inland).

With a total of 256 kilometers cycled, we had a daily average of approx. 50 km. Our average speed was 15 km/h, so it was a leisurely tour all round.

Conclusion:

We will book with Radweg-Reisen again next time because the preparation and support during the trip is great. The bikes were very well maintained and optimally adjusted.
