Travel report: Cycle tour from Constance to Interlaken

From our guests Isabel and Mark

We are Isabel and Mark from North Rhine-Westphalia and enthusiastic mountain bike riders. This is the second time we've embarked on a cycle tour via Radweg-Reisen, and this time it's going to be a more strenuous route from Lake Constance to the Alps. We want to cycle from Constance to Interlaken in central Switzerland.

The company Radweg-Reisen takes care of the hotel bookings, the luggage transfer and sends us our documents home in good time. As usual, everything went smoothly and professionally. The documents are detailed and fun to leaf through. We are already looking forward to our cycling vacation. But there is also a bit of worry: Do we have enough stamina and strength for this challenging tour? Will we be able to cope with the altitude and climbs in the Alps?

But we soon realize as we continue planning that there are plenty of options to change to a boat, train, or bus if necessary. You never know what might happen... and whether our strength will last.

Day 1: Arrival in Constance

We arrive in Constance independently with our car and our bikes. We arrived very early but were able to drop off our luggage at the hotel and park our car in the secure parking lot at Radweg-Reisen. We are warmly welcomed there, served drinks, and given tips for our cycle tour. We start the day in high spirits and explore Constance, the weather is glorious. We redeem our rail checks for tickets at the station, as the tour includes two train journeys in Switzerland, which Radweg-Reisen has already sent us in the documents. Well, if it continues as it starts, nothing can really go wrong, can it?

Day 2: From Constance to Schaffhausen, 50 kilometers

It rumbles violently during the night, we can't sleep a wink. The morning starts with heavy rain and thunderstorms. This annoys us, but we quickly improvise! We drop off our luggage in the lobby and ride our bikes to the port in Constance. There we buy tickets for the boat and take the very first boat towards Stein am Rhein. The bikes are securely lashed down on board, we find the boat trip wonderfully relaxing and we glide along the Untersee and Hochrhein through beautiful river landscapes. We cross the border swimming and, most importantly, we stay dry.
We disembark in Stein am Rhein and visit the fascinating old town and St. Georgen monastery. And who's to say? The weather suddenly gets really good again.
So we get on our bikes and cycle through small historic towns such as Gailingen and Büsingen and on through the Swiss Thurgau region, following the Rhine along its banks the whole time. In the afternoon we reach our destination, Schaffhausen.

Day 3: From Schaffhausen to Zurich, 75 kilometers

Well rested and fortified with a great breakfast, we start the day. Today's stage is long and will take us all the way to Zurich. Right at the start of the stage, we pass the Rhine Falls in Schaffhausen and marvel at the thundering masses of water that cascade down here. We are very impressed by the largest waterfall in Europe. The journey continues along the High Rhine and its bends, past beautiful floodplain landscapes and stunning vineyards. We ride uphill and downhill, through Eglisau, Höri, Rümlang and Oerlikon and reach Zurich, Switzerland's largest city on the Limmat, late in the afternoon, exhausted but happy. We marvel at Zurich and its old town with its narrow streets. It's beautiful here. We end the evening in a cozy brewery.

So far, we are really impressed with Switzerland as a cycling country. All the cycle paths are very well signposted. And if you are ever unsure, the locals are very friendly and happy to help.

Day 4: From Zurich to Einsiedeln, 35 kilometers + train ride

A new day begins and the sun is already shining beautifully from the blue sky in the morning. Once again we have slept well and had a good breakfast, we start our stage to Einsiedeln, which takes us along the northern shore of Lake Zurich. The early morning mist lies beautifully over the lake and we cycle along the Gold Coast. This got its name because of the high property prices and we see beautiful villas along the way.

This stage is certainly one of the most beautiful, as you always have a great view of the lake and cycle through vineyards. Fine Pinot Gris grows on its slopes. We cycle along a very beautiful mountain path and the nature around us becomes increasingly Mediterranean. We make several stops, the views are simply too beautiful.

At midday we reach Rapperswil-Jona. A small medieval town situated on the narrowest part of Lake Zurich. After a longer stay there, we travel over the dam of Lake Zurich to Pfäffikon. We take the Swiss regional train to Einsiedeln, which saves us about 400 meters in altitude, and leave the beautiful Lake Zurich. We've got ourselves a good sunburn today. Once we arrive in lovely Einsiedeln, we visit the baroque monastery and round off the day with a good meal and a walk.

Day 5: From Einsiedeln to Lucerne, 75 kilometers

I'm getting up early again. Today the stage takes us to Lucerne and it is certainly the most strenuous tour. The weather is great. We quickly stock up on drinks and snacks at the supermarket before setting off... we cycle through the agricultural area around Einsiedeln.

At the very beginning, the route climbs steeply up the Chatzenstrick. We actually have to push, but now we have a great view of the Alps ahead of us. We descend to Zug and pass gravel paths and hiking trails. It's a good thing we're on our mountain bikes. We pass mountain pastures and lots of happy cows. We ride along a beautiful mountain trail to Lake Aegeri, which lies picturesquely before us.

We linger here for a while before continuing on to Zug. The route is excellently described, we arrive at Lake Zug around midday and can't stop marveling at how beautiful it is here. We take a long break at a swimming area in Cham, fortify ourselves and take a spontaneous dip.

We decide to cycle on to Lucerne via Baar and follow Lake Zug for a good while. By now, the meters of altitude covered are really getting to us. But we reach our destination of Lucerne in the afternoon. Once again we are struck by the beauty of this landscape. Lucerne and Lake Lucerne lie before us. There is a lot of hustle and bustle here, many tourists are out and about.

Thank goodness we have a hotel a little away from the city. And which one! We get an upgrade at the hotel and a picture-perfect room. An unobstructed view over the magnificent lake with the Alps as a backdrop. We are blown away and visit the hotel bar by the lake and experience the most beautiful sunset we have ever seen. A wonderful day with a visit to three natural lakes comes to an end.

Day 6: From Lucerne to Interlaken, 65 kilometers + train ride

A new day begins and it's another exhausting one. We have breakfast together with what feels like 50 Chinese people and have to fight really hard for our bread rolls.

We set off with motivation, today we follow the shores of Lake Lucerne, but first we take a look at the Chapel Bridge in Lucerne. The weather changes in the course of the morning. We ride safely and separately next to the car lane on a separate cycle path.

The views of the lake, which is very large and partially encircled by steep mountain flanks, are fantastic. We continue to Stansstad and pass beautiful routes across meadows and along floodplains. Another lake opens up in front of us, the Sarner See.

We have already arrived in Giswil and are looking for the train station. We change to the Brünig Railway, which takes us up the Brünig Pass. The train runs on cogwheels and climbs 1000 meters. The weather changes as we board the train. So we decide to extend the train ticket to Interlaken with the conductor.

The rain pours down relentlessly on the train. We end up in a compartment with lots of Chinese people. They are so enthusiastic about us that we are quickly snapped with our bikes. Probably everyone on social media in China now knows that we're on the train.

We ride past Lake Brienz and arrive in Interlaken in the afternoon in pouring rain. We are sad because we were supposed to be greeted by the panorama of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. But unfortunately, all we see are clouds ahead of us.

Day 7: Extra night in Interlaken

Radweg-Reisen responded to our wishes and booked us an extra night at the hotel in Interlaken. We get up early again and swap our bikes for hiking boots. We take the cogwheel railroad from Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen and want to see the beautiful high valley there.

The journey starts with many tourists and we get off in Lauterbrunnen, almost all the others want to continue to the Jungfraujoch. We visit the Swiss valley with its steep mountain flanks and hike to the end of the valley. It is beautiful here. The fog is still hanging low and we can't see the four-thousand-metre peaks, but it's still great here. We visit the Staubbach Falls, watch base jumpers and enjoy an original cheese fondue to round off our trip. You can have a lot of fun even without the sun!

Conclusion:

Cycling in Switzerland offers beautiful cycle paths in breathtaking natural surroundings. There are natural gems to discover here that are truly second to none. We met lovely, helpful and friendly people on our trip. Switzerland is expensive, but you can stock up well and cheaply in the supermarket for your daily journey. This is easily possible in every town. If you visit a restaurant in a side street instead of directly on the market square, you can dine at reasonable prices.

Once again, this extraordinary trip worked out wonderfully for us. Radweg-Reisen organized and planned everything to our complete satisfaction. The return transfer from Switzerland to Constance also went without a hitch. We say thank you very much, we will certainly be seeing you again soon.
