Fundamentally, we would like to emphasize that we particularly liked the chronologically free selection of the individual day trips. When planning the trip, we had already allocated ourselves an extra night and were therefore able to choose our tours freely depending on the weather and our physical condition. We had chosen the ABC Hotel in Constance as our accommodation.
Show more Show lessOur journey by car took us from the Innviertel region of Upper Austria via Munich, Landsberg am Lech, Memmingen and Lindau to the ferry connection from Meersburg to Constance. We crossed at around 14:00 and enjoyed the short crossing due to the fantastic weather.
A new impression for us was the traffic in the "bicycle city" of Constance. Bikes, bikes, bikes!
Checking in with the competent and very friendly hotel operator himself also helped us a lot with orientation and getting to know the city, as it was our wish to visit pubs and restaurants that are also frequented by the locals in addition to visiting the old town.
After a hearty breakfast the next morning, we set off on our first cycle tour suggestion 4: Around the Untersee lake; even on the first ride, we noticed that the information and suggestions in the travel documents we received were extremely informative and helpful before setting off and during the stage.
We were particularly impressed on this trail by the "so-called turning point" of the route, the real cultural gem, the old town of Stein am Rhein, before heading south-east of the so-called Untersee lake back towards Constance. We were already impressed by the references to places of interest in the suggested route on the first day's tour!
The weather forecast for this day had predicted not only clear sunshine, but possibly also brief showers. Although we had rain protection with us, we conveniently opted for the short tour to the flower island of Mainau. Presumably due to the fact that it was still the early tourist season and the day of the week - it was a Monday - the influx of visitors was limited and we were able to really enjoy tour suggestion 2: "Excursion to Mainau Island". Flowers, flower beds, park landscapes etc. A visit to the second-largest butterfly house in Germany is highly recommended!
Show more Show lessWe had opted for the longest lap of the suggested route to Lindau. With extra detours, we "cycled" a total of 58 km.
After taking the ferry across, we climbed the short ascent from the lovely little old town of Meersburg to the castle square and enjoyed the view of Lake Constance from the new Meersburg Castle.
The detour to the harbour in Friedrichshafen, including the climb up the 22 m high Moleturm tower, was also well worth it.
We continued via Langenargen to the island of Lindau, where we took a stroll through the old town and enjoyed a cappuccino and cake in a small bakery.
Of course, we memorized the departure time of the liner back to "Konschtanz", as the locals call their town in dialect, and made the most of the three-hour trip on deck with the view and the peaceful glide to relax.
In order not to completely melt into the saddle of our bikes, we decided to take a motorized detour to the Rhine Falls in Schaffhausen for the day. We drove by car on the A7 and Route 13 - roughly along the Rhine - a one-way trip of around 58 km. We used Google to find a parking space beforehand and then hiked upstream to this 150 m wide natural spectacle, over which an average of 600 m3 of water plunges over the 23 m high rock step in summer.
Before the start of this day, we had no idea what we would experience or see on tour suggestion 3 "Round trip to Salem".
We started on the southern shore of Lake Constance heading west towards the town of Wallhausen. Once again redeeming an included voucher for the ferry crossing to Überlingen, we then continued eastwards.
Before heading north from the lake, we made a detour to the Birnau monastery church recommended in the tour description, once again with a fantastic view across the lake towards the island of Mainau.
We were really surprised when we came to the so-called Affenberg near Mendlishausen and passed right through a breeding colony of white storks, which were busy feeding their young. Up to 5 stork nests on a single tree or 3 breeding places on a roof were to be admired.
As a highlight, we then took advantage of the half-hour guided tour of the former Cistercian monastery and castle of the Margraves of Baden, also with voucher admission.
We then continued our journey directly via Unteruhldingen to the car ferry and then relaxed again to Konstanz-Staad.
