We cycled the Danube tour from Donaueschingen to Passau and would like to report the following:
The first sections from Donaueschingen with the first overnight stay in Fridingen and on to Scheer were the most beautiful cycle routes of our many years of cycling experience. The rolling valleys, green meadows and forests were a delight under a deep blue sky. Several hours on the bike, hardly being disturbed by traffic, were impressive.
The castle in Sigmaringen (admission included) is worth seeing and you should allow about an hour for this. The next sections to Ehingen and Ulm went through slightly more open valley landscapes. Smaller villages were passed along the way. The town of Blaubeuren with its deep blue lake is a real attraction. The associated history is also very interesting.
Ulm not only has an impressive cathedral, but also a really great old town and an opportunity for the many students to linger on the Danube in front of the city walls. After Lauingen, Donauwörth and Ingolstadt, the tour continued through flat, wide terrain with great panoramic views. The fields were often transformed into a colorful sea by the red poppy flowers. Unfortunately, due to our tour planning, we reached Ingolstadt on a Saturday and were unable to visit Audi due to time constraints. On the way to Kelheim, the last 10 kilometers were planned as a boat tour (incl.). It is quite a spectacle to sail past the high cliffs at such a short distance. On the way to Regensburg, the Bavarian Forest appears in the north and leisurely passes by during the last destinations Straubing, Deggendorf and Passau.
On the final tour to Passau, the wooded mountains fall away again and you have another wide panorama in front of you. The impressions gathered cannot be described in words, but those who have experienced them will not forget them. It should also be mentioned that the hotels booked by the organizer were very nice and had extremely friendly staff. The accommodation for the bikes was also well taken care of. The last section (Deggendorf-Passau) is marked by detour due to extensive reconstruction work for flood protection and unfortunately not well signposted throughout. However, this in no way detracted from the overall impression of the trip.
Show more Show lessI would like to mention once again the good organization of the trip including luggage transport. The travel documents including descriptions of sights were flawless. As we were a little dissatisfied with the train journey (especially bike transportation), we are considering using the rental bikes on offer in the near future.
