Travel Report: The Baltic Sea Cycle Path in Denmark

From our guests Inge & Peter and their friends

We were pleasantly surprised when we received the extensive travel documents. Everything was listed in detail. We also received the GPS data for the individual routes, which was very helpful.

The travel documents contained all the necessary information: Stage maps, city maps, vouchers, hotel list.

Stage 1 from Flensburg to Åbenrå (55.6 kilometers)

We set off from our accommodation Hotel Alte Post in Flensburg full of anticipation. The weather forecast wasn't too good, but we didn't let that bother us. Rain gear was in the rucksack. But we were spared the rain. The tour took us past large fields, small farms and, time and again, beautiful churches built outside.

The entire route was sparsely populated. There were hardly any opportunities to stop for refreshments in the few small villages. You usually searched in vain for a café or similar. At our destination in Åbenrå, we were accommodated in the Hotel Europa. The bikes could be parked in a locked container. Note: There was no power connection. Permanently installed batteries could not be charged!

Stage 2 from Åbenrå to Christiansfeld (54.7 kilometers)

We opted for the alternative route via Vejstruprød to Kolding. The reason for this was the bad weather forecast. Departure for stage 2 from Åbenrå to Christiansfeld. Here, too, we cycled through a lot of open farmland. The cycle paths were very well signposted and easy to cycle on. This was the purest wellness tour.

The town center of Christiansfeld impresses with its many half-timbered houses. Everything is very clean and well-kept. Today we still had some time to look around the town.

Just before our destination, the rain caught us. But we were well equipped with rain gear. But our Hotel Tystrup Kro was an absolute eye-catcher. A property built in 1756 with thatched roofs and very comfortable rooms. The food was delicious, the owner, an Italian, greeted us in a very friendly manner and flirted with one of our ladies.

Stage 3 from Christiansfeld to Middelfart (81.5 kilometers)

Today we chose the longer route as it took us partly along the Little Belt and we thought it was more varied. And that was it. However, it should end with obstacles! Once we had left the section of the Little Belt, we were faced with a somewhat greater challenge. The paths in the section of forest we had to ride through were soft in places and we had to be very careful. But everything went well.

Past beautiful buildings such as an old windmill and a house beautifully decorated with flowers, the journey continued via Kolding to Middelfart.

And then this happened: Flat tire on the rear wheel. The sealing spray I had brought with me didn't work, so I removed the rear wheel. No way, no chance of getting the casing off the rim. It was glued on. As we had our own bikes with us, the Radreisen breakdown service couldn't help us. We called a cab, which arrived a good hour later. It was getting dark, but we still made it to the hotel.

Stage 4 from Middelfart to Odense (83.3 kilometers)

Today's stage was a little different. We didn't want to cycle the entire route inland, but instead took a route along the Little Belt and then headed south-east to Odense. It was longer, but very nice.

Stage 5 from Odense to Svendborg (67.2 kilometers)

This stage was also characterized by many fields and small villages. There was hardly an opportunity for a coffee break and the delicious sweets for which Denmark is famous. We took a break at Egeskov moated castle.

Tip from us: Perhaps split this stage in two, from Odense to Nyborg and from Nyborg to Svendborg. It doesn't go inland, but partly along the Baltic Sea (skip the island of Skarø).

On arrival at our destination, we were delighted with both the town and our Hotel Christiansminde. Located directly on Svendborgsund - rooms with a view of the sea.

Stage 6/7 to the islands of Ærø and Skarø (64 kilometers)

We took the ferry from the port in Svendborg to the islands. On the island of Ærø, we then circumnavigated the entire island from the mooring station. Marstal is definitely worth a stop and the small, narrow streets with their little winding houses are well worth seeing. There is not much worth seeing on the island of Skarø. A small café invites you to linger. Otherwise, every path you take off the "main road" leads to the beach after a few meters. In any case, the two excursions were pure relaxation after the previous strenuous days.

Stage 8 from Svendborg to Fåborg (53.9 kilometers)

A large part of today's stage took us along the Baltic Sea, at least for the first half. The weather was glorious and there were a few sights to marvel at, such as this castle. We really enjoyed the day, took a few long breaks and then...... actually dared to take a dip in the Baltic Sea. The first moment had to be overcome, but then it was wonderful.

Afterwards, you could warm up in the sun again. A few locals who regularly came to swim there passed by. And then another highlight that we had been waiting for so long. A "Baggerie" with lots of delicious sweets. Of course, we couldn't cycle past it.

Stage 9 from Svendborg to Sønderborg (61.6 kilometers)

We again took a slightly different approach to the first stage, as the route from Fåborg to the ferry port to Bojden was relatively short. We chose a route along the water and used the good maps provided by Radreisen. Once again, the weather gods were kind to us and we enjoyed the stage in glorious sunshine. Again and again we noticed that the country is sparsely populated, there are few villages to cycle through and everything looks idyllic.

From Fynshav on the island of Als, first inland and then along the Flensburg Fjord to Sønderborg. The hotel highlight awaited us there: Steigenberger Alsik Hotel. Our room was on the 10th floor and the view of the harbor and the city was magnificent. You should be free from giddiness.

Stage 10 from Sønderborg to Flensburg (45.3 kilometers)

Today is the final stage. The highlight of the stage was the summer residence of the Danish royal family in Gråsten.

We were impressed by the imposing building and the well-tended garden. Further along the Flensburg Fjord, we also discovered a memorial to the war in 1864. The memorial commemorates the attack by the Prussians against the Danes. There is also an exhibition building next door where you can find out more.

But then there was no stopping us. We followed the familiar Route 8 to our destination in Flensburg. Everyone there was happy and delighted to have completed the tour.
