Travel report: The family cycling tour at the baltic coast
My husband and I had booked another cycling trip through your company, the family cycling tour at the baltic coast. It was a very nice trip, the friendliness and serenity of the people in the north was striking.
We were very lucky with the weather, it was warm, pleasant to cycle and swim. It was a bit gusty from the east for two days. The beautiful weather was over on the way home.
As always, the travel documents were very good. The organization was excellent, we were expected at the hotels, the suitcases were ready. There were no unpleasant incidents.
However, there were discrepancies between the description of the day trip in the booking folder and the route marked on the maps of the Baltic Sea Cycle Route. But that wasn't so bad, you always get back on the Baltic Sea Cycle Route. However, the signposting of the cycle paths could still be improved. There are also often no signs leading to the actual cycle path. On the island of Poel, the cycle path was not passable according to the map, the signposting was non-existent or sparse, information at the ferry port would have helped.
We discovered several repair and charging stations for bicycles in Mecklenburg. This was new to us and we hope to come across these more often in the future.
We opted for the family trip with short stages and plenty of time to relax and explore the surroundings. We particularly liked the latter. Staying two nights in one place is great, as it gives you more time to get to know the town and sights in the surrounding area. We had never heard of Bothmer Castle before, which really impressed us.
On the tour to the next place, you have time to look at or explore something or go swimming. At the daily destinations, there are hardly any opportunities to get to know the places, go on city tours or visit museums, as these usually end or close at 4pm or 5pm. The rooms in the hotel were only available from 15:00. If we plan another cycle tour in the future, we will certainly plan extra days if possible.
Lübeck - Mercure Hotel Lübeck City Center - two nights
It was a bit winding until you got to the room, not barrier-free throughout, a bit cumbersome with the luggage on arrival and departure. We were a bit confused about breakfast times, there was no rush in the hotel. Our room under the roof was quite small, a bit cramped with two suitcases and four bicycle bags. The proximity to the old town was very positive. The underground parking garage was also very cramped, the bicycles could be parked somewhat stepmotherly against the wall. It was not actually intended to park bicycles. There were already several bicycles there and we squeezed into a corner.
There was a water bottle in the room that you could fill at the bubble machine in the hallway, great in the heat.
We had arrived by car and wanted to park it until the end of our vacation in Lübeck. There was no space in the hotel, the recommended long-term parking lot "Beim Retteich" was only available for up to three days. A nice local then explained to us that longer parking is only possible in parking garages, which is what we did.
Boltenhagen - Hotel Gutshaus Redewisch, - two nights
This was a really great hotel. Your description was spot on, very friendly, great breakfast and restaurant, very quiet. Very cozy room with plenty of storage. An extra room for the bikes with plenty of space.
Wismar - Hotel Townhouse Stadt Hamburg - two nights
Very nice hotel on the market square with a rich breakfast. We had a very nice room, quiet location.
The special thing was the bicycle garage, we have never experienced such a storage facility. Lockable compartments for luggage and bicycles, lockable compartments at the charging station for the battery, complete workshop with washing facilities for bicycles, drying racks for clothing. The stairs had electric treadmills for the bikes for easy transportation. Pure luxury.
Bad Doberan - Hotel Prinzenpalais - one night
The name promises more than it is. Like the town, the hotel made a somewhat neglected impression. The room was large and very quiet. The breakfast room was very nice and stylish, good breakfast. The bikes could be left in a tiny adjoining room with a noisy and stuffy heating or ventilation system. This was a total downfall after the garage in Wismar.
Warnemünde - Strand-Hotel Hübner - two nights
At the end we were spoiled again, very nice hotel on the beach promenade. Actually, the Park Hotel was indicated in the description, but the Stand Hotel was perhaps the better hotel. The breakfast was again excellent. Nice spacious rooms, our luggage was even brought to the room. After the bike tour, the swimming pool on the roof with a view of the Baltic Sea (looking at ships) was a blessing. The bikes had space on the wall in the underground garage, you got the impression that they were just tolerated.
In conclusion, we can say that it was a very successful vacation. Some of the short cycle routes (25-35 km) were a bit too challenging for us, but we had booked it that way. However, this made the vacation very relaxing.
The Baltic Sea cycle path vacation is highly recommended, beautiful historical places, interesting history and buildings, varied landscape, friendly relaxed people.
