Adventure, challenge and relaxation at the same time. This is what awaits you on the comparatively easy Transalp on the Alpe Adria Route. However, you should bring along a certain basic level of fitness due to the longer stages and some climbs. Every day you will be rewarded for the kilometres you have covered. Experience a highlight right at the beginning of the tour with the Mozart city of Salzburg. But this should not be the only one! The wonderful nature along the rugged mountain ranges and the wide valleys along the numerous rivers will leave you in awe. Relax your legs on speedy descents past rushing waterfalls. The warm hospitality of the cosy Austrians and the lively Italians is infectious. Enjoy the culinary delights of the cuisine, which is characterised by a wide variety of influences. Enjoyable wines also come from the region. Don‘t miss out on a tasting! You will also experience one last highlight at the end of your Transalp on the Alpe Adria Route - the historic fishing town of Grado. Sun, beach and sea - you‘ve earned it!
Arrive to Salzburg early so that you have plenty of time to discover the historic old town. Admire here in a small space buildings of different architectural eras. Visit Mozart's birthplace in Getreidegasse and then sit down with Austrian coffee specialties in a café and watch the hustle and bustle in the city.
Leave Salzburg behind and cycle south following the Salzach river. The first stage of your Transalp Tour on the Alpe Adria Route is a leisurely one. Through shady meadows you reach Hallein, where you can visit the oldest salt show mine in the world. Walk along the impressive waterfalls in Golling and enjoy the natural spectacle. Back in the saddle you cycle the last kilometers to St. Johann relaxed with a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains.
Today the first crisp climb to Oberuntersberg through the wild and romantic Gastein valley awaits you. Once you arrive in the cozy spa town of Bad Gastein, the meters of altitude in your legs are almost forgotten, because warm hospitality and the breathtaking nature of the mountains await you. Would you prefer to take it a little easier? Then take the train from St. Johann to Bad Hofgastein and save yourself some ascents. No matter which means of transport you used to get to Böckstein: Here you change to the train. Rush through the Tauernschleuse to the south side of the main Alpine ridge to Mallnitz in the Mölltal valley in just 10 minutes.
Due to construction work, the Tauernschleuse is expected to be out of service until July 4, 2025. During this period, the itinerary will be adjusted. You will spend the night in the Gastein Valley instead of the Mölltal and will be transferred to Spittal.
In the saddle, a leisurely ride awaits you in the Mölltal valley through an impressive high-mountain landscape. Soon you will reach the Drava River in the village of Möllbrücke and thus the sunny south of Austria. Leisurely cycle through idyllic villages and enjoy the breathtaking nature. In Spittal an der Drau, visit Porcia Castle, one of the most important Renaissance buildings north of the Alps.
Cut short the climb to Tarvis by train as you cross the national border. Greet Italy with a hearty Ciao! You cycle through the narrow Canal Valley and enjoy the unique view of the mountains towering to the right and left. The bike path leads partly along an old railroad line through numerous tunnels. To relax in the evening, enjoy delicious food from the region in a small trattoria.
One thing stands out immediately today. No rugged mountain ranges but lush green vineyards line your path. Visit the pretty village of Gemona, whose townscape is dominated by its majestic cathedral. Did you know that the columns of the cathedral have been leaning since an earthquake? Afterwards, you will cycle to Udine. Let yourself be enchanted by the Venetian charm of the many piazzas and palaces. During your walk you will find numerous typical wine taverns. Be sure to taste the local wines.
Totally relaxed and without major efforts you roll today towards the sea. The warm Scirocco blows around your nose, to the right and left wide reed landscapes and small channels. The last stage of your Transalp on the Alpe Adria Route could not be more beautiful! Arrived in the historic fishing village of Grado, you snap a souvenir photo on the long, fine sandy beach and let the many impressions of your journey sink in over a leisurely dinner in the old town.
