On your bike tour from the Hohe Tauern to Passau you will experience both. All around you look at the high snow-covered peaks of the mountains, while you cycle very relaxed on mostly flat paths through the gentle valleys of the Salzach, Saalach and Inn rivers. New highlights await you every day - both scenic and cultural. Visit Europe‘s largest waterfalls in Krimml and swim in Lake Zell, one of the purest bathing lakes in Austria. Even from a distance you will discover the numerous castles, churches and palaces on the surrounding hills. Hike through an impressive gorge and explore the longest passage cave in the world near Lofer. With Salzburg and Passau you will get to know two beautiful cities. Take ample time to explore the numerous sights such as Mozart‘s birthplace and St. Stephen‘s Cathedral. Let yourself be spoiled also culinary. Who can resist a hearty Kasnocken or a sweet Kaiserschmarrn?
After breakfast, mount your bike and enjoy a leisurely ride along the Salzach River through the Hohe Tauern National Park. Lush green meadows and charming villages provide a picturesque backdrop, framed by the stunning snow-capped peaks that rise above 3,000 meters. Upon reaching Kaprun, take the opportunity to visit the iconic castle that majestically overlooks the town. If you're feeling adventurous, consider exploring the Sigmund Thun Gorge for a captivating hike (not included).
Today's stage features several remarkable highlights. Begin your journey with a refreshing swim in Lake Zell. After a few kilometers, you'll arrive at the renowned pilgrimage church of Maria Alm. Saalfelden is an ideal stop for lunch; savor local specialties such as flavorful cheese and sausage to recharge before continuing your ride. Consider a guided tour of the Lamprechtshöhle near Weißbach (not included) as it is one of the longest passage caves in the world.
As you cycle through the serene Saalach Valley, you'll arrive in Bad Reichenhall. Take a moment to enjoy a coffee in the charming old town, which exudes typical Bavarian charm. Then, with anticipation, continue your ride to the city of Salzburg, renowned for its rich cultural heritage. Be sure to allocate ample time to explore its many attractions. Visit Mozart's birthplace located on Getreidegasse, and don't miss the stunning Mirabell and Hellbrunn castles. For a breathtaking view of the city, ascend to Hohensalzburg Fortress, where you can take in the panoramic scenery.
With the Alps behind you, you will now cycle through the diverse landscapes of the Alpine foothills. As you navigate through expansive floodplain forests, you'll encounter the vibrant, untouched nature of the European reserve Unterer Inn, home to a rich variety of plant and bird species. In the distance, the impressive battlements and towers of the longest castle complex in the world will come into view. Upon arriving in Burghausen, you’ll first explore the castle before savoring the region's culinary delights in a charming rustic vaulted cellar.
As you cycle leisurely along the Inn River, you'll immerse yourself in the tranquil natural surroundings. Enjoy the picturesque views of the water, mud banks, and charming wooded islands, and keep an eye out for beavers at work. The Gothic town of Braunau makes for a perfect lunch stop. Afterward, you can choose to continue your ride on either the German or Austrian side of the river. Your overnight stay will be in either the baroque town of Obernberg or the spa town of Bad Füssing, both offering unique experiences.
Today your bike tour along the Tauern cycle Path leads you along the Inn River. Here a series of picturesque towns await you, each of them a gem worth exploring. Begin your day with a visit to Reichersberg Abbey, followed by a stroll through the baroque market square of Schärding. After cycling a few more kilometers, you will arrive in Passau, the final destination of your bike tour. Here, you can admire St. Stephen's Cathedral, home to the largest cathedral organ in the world, and wander through the charming old town. Don’t miss the breathtaking view from Veste Oberhaus, where you can see the confluence of the Inn, Ilz, and Danube rivers, each showcasing its own unique color.
