Nestled between vineyards, picturesque winegrowing villages and legendary castles, the Moselle meanders elegantly through its valley. On our short tour along the Moselle, you will get to know Germany's oldest wine region. The sun-kissed wines will make you rave about them. But there is also plenty to see on our short tour along the Moselle. You start in Trier. The city knows how to impress with its remarkable buildings from more than 2000 years of city history. The route continues to Neumagen-Dhron, the oldest German wine village. The Weinschiff (wine ship) there bears witness to the wine-growing culture on the Moselle, which was already important in Roman times. The enchanting half-timbered town of Bernkastel-Kues, the majestic Eltz Castle and the Reichsburg Castle in Cochem are romantic places to visit. The destination of our short tour on the Moselle is Koblenz. The city is characterized by Deutsches Eck and Ehrenbreitenstein Fortress, which towers over the Rhine. As you can see, there is a lot to see and even more to experience on our short tour along the Moselle – and all of this in a relaxed manner, without any significant gradients and on high quality cycle paths.
Your short tour on the Moselle starts in Trier. We recommend arriving early, as Germany's oldest city has a lot to offer. Trier was founded by the Romans more than 2000 years ago. Their influence can still be seen in many corners of the city today. The Porta Nigra (Black Gate) will particularly catch your eye. It is not only the city's landmark, but also the perfect starting point for exploring the old town with its many sights and buildings.
On the first stage of your short cycle tour, you follow the Moselle as it winds gently through its valley framed by vineyards. Plan a longer stopover in Neumagen-Dhron. The town is considered to be the oldest German wine-growing community. The Neumagener Weinschiff (wine ship) in the town center bears witness to the early Roman settlement. A floatable replica is moored on the banks of the Moselle. Piesport is just a few kilometers away. Sample one of the fine wines from the Piesporter Goldtröpfchen vineyard and visit the reconstructed wine press, where wine was processed in Roman times.
Leave Piesport with a view of the Moselloreley, a steep rock massif. You reach Bernkastel-Kues, one of the most picturesque towns on the Moselle. The half-timbered town lies at the foot of steep vineyards and will delight you with its centuries-old half-timbered houses, cobbled streets and cozy wine taverns. Taste a sparkling white wine from the Bernkasteler Doctor vineyard before your short tour along the Moselle takes you to Traben-Trarbach. Located on both sides of the Moselle, the town is dominated by the Grevenburg castle ruins and has one of the most beautiful riverside promenades along the Moselle.
Today's stage of your short tour along the Moselle first takes you to Zell. Surrounded by millions of vines, the town is one of the largest wine-growing communities in Germany. The Schwarze Katz vineyard, which produces excellent wines, is known worldwide. You follow the meanders of the Moselle and reach Cochem. You will notice the Cochem Reichsburg from afar. It towers impressively over the town, which can look back on more than 1000 years of history. Are you drawn to the heights? Then take a seat in the Cochem chairlift and float up to the Pinnerkreuz viewpoint.
On your last day of cycling, relax and follow the Moselle until you reach Treis-Karden. The white Moseldom is the most important church between Trier and Koblenz and dominates the town's skyline. Eltz Castle is just a stone's throw away from Treis-Karden, slightly off the Moselle. It is one of the most beautiful and impressive castles in Germany. Back on the Moselle Cycle Route in Rhineland-Palatinate, you reach Koblenz. Before your trip ends in Koblenz and you depart without an overnight stay, pay a visit to Deutsches Eck and Ehrenbreitenstein Fortress. We are happy to extend your stay in Trier or Koblenz with an extra night.
