Nestled between vineyards, picturesque winegrowing villages and legendary castles, the Moselle meanders elegantly through its valley. On our short tour along the Moselle, you will get to know Germany's oldest wine region. The sun-kissed wines will make you rave about them. But there is also plenty to see on our short tour along the Moselle. You start in Trier. The city knows how to impress with its remarkable buildings from more than 2000 years of city history. The route continues to Neumagen-Dhron, the oldest German wine village. The Weinschiff (wine ship) there bears witness to the wine-growing culture on the Moselle, which was already important in Roman times. The enchanting half-timbered town of Bernkastel-Kues, the majestic Eltz Castle and the Reichsburg Castle in Cochem are romantic places to visit. The destination of our short tour on the Moselle is Koblenz. The city is characterized by Deutsches Eck and Ehrenbreitenstein Fortress, which towers over the Rhine. As you can see, there is a lot to see and even more to experience on our short tour along the Moselle – and all of this in a relaxed manner, without any significant gradients and on high quality cycle paths.
Your short tour along the Moselle begins in Trier. We recommed arriving early to Germany's oldest city. It was founded by the Romans over 2,000 years ago and their influence is still prominent throughout the city. The iconic Porta Nigra (Black Gate) stands as a prominent landmark. It is the perfect starting point to explore the city's historic centre. Here you’ll find numerous sights and architectural treasures.
On the first stage of your cycle tour, you follow the Moselle as it meanders gently through the valley, surrounded by picturesque vineyards. We recommend a longer stop in Neumagen-Dhron, Germany's oldest wine-growing village. Here, the Neumagener Weinschiff (wine ship) moored in the town's centre offers a fascinating glimpse into the roman trade.
Just a few kilometres further, you’ll reach Piesport renowned for the Piesporter Goldtröpfchen vineyard. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the reconstructed Roman wine press here to get a fascinating insight into the ancient winemaking process.
Leaving Piesport, you'll be treated to a striking view of the Moselloreley, a dramatic rock massif rising above the river. Your route continues to Bernkastel-Kues which enchants with its centuries-old half-timbered houses, cobbled streets, and charming wine taverns. Be sure to taste a sparkling white wine from the prestigious Bernkasteler Doctor vineyard before continuing your journey to Traben-Trarbach.
Situated on both sides of the Moselle, Traben-Trarbach is dominated by the ruins of Grevenburg Castle. The town is renowned for its beautiful riverside promenade which is considered one of the most scenic along the Moselle river banks.
Today's stage of your short tour along the Moselle takes you to Zell. The town is surrounded by millions of vines – it is Germany's largest wine-growing communities. Zell produces exceptional wines that are a true reflection of the region's rich viticultural heritage. It is particularly known for the Schwarze Katz vineyard.
Continuing along the winding Moselle, you’ll reach Cochem. Here the imposing Reichsburg Castle shapes the skyline. With over 1,000 years of history, Cochem is a town steeped in heritage. For a stunning view of the town and the valley below, take a ride on the Cochem chairlift to the Pinnerkreuz viewpoint, offering a panoramic perspective of this charming region.
On the final day of your short bike tour, enjoy a leisurely ride along the Moselle towards Treis-Karden. Here, the white Moseldom the most important church between Trier and Koblenz, awaits your visit.
Just a short distance from Treis-Karden, you’ll find the magnificent Eltz Castle, one of the most beautiful and well-preserved castles in Germany. After visiting, continue along the Moselle Cycle Route into Rhineland-Palatinate, heading towards Koblenz.
Before your tour concludes in Koblenz, take time to visit the Deutsche Eck. Here the imposing Ehrenbreitstein Fortress guarded the confluence of the Moselle and the Rhine. If you’d like to extend your stay, we’d be happy to arrange an additional night in either Treves or Koblenz.
