In Germany's northernmost state, between the Baltic and the North Sea, is Schleswig-Holstein where you will find not just salt water, sun, and wind but also an excellently signed network of cycle paths. At Schleswig-Holstein's North Sea coast, you can expect flat marshland, the Wadden Sea, the North Frisian islands, and a lot of lovely lighthouses. The diversity of the Baltic Coast provides you with a worthy program of contrasts. It beckons with cliffs, lively towns, wind and watermills, wonderful views over the Baltic, and the chance here and there to in for a dip. No matter which coast you go for, all cyclists will get their money's worth.
The local dishes of Schleswig-Holstein are influenced by the flavors of Lower Saxony, Denmark, and Frisia. The location here between two seas is why lovers of fish are richly supplied with their favorite dish. Carp, buttered plaice, Kiel sprats or the classic fish rolls - there's a huge selection to choose from. If you like your food to be more rustic, we can recommend Beer'n, Boh'n un Speck - pears, beans and bacon plus potatoes or seamen's cuisine - e.g. Labskaus. Last but not least: Friesengeist or Küstennebel - schnaps!
