Welcome to your Sardinia bike tour on the west coast. The second largest island in the Mediterranean is perfect for a cycling vacation! On this tour, you will not only cycle along the coast, but also get to know the hinterland. The island is known above all for its beautiful beaches and coasts with turquoise waters, delicious wines and olive oils. During your Sardinia cycle tour, you will also get to know the Nuragic culture, which can only be found on the island. Not much is known about this culture. It is assumed that it developed from the indigenous Sardinian population in the Bronze Age. During your cycle tour from Alghero via Bosa and Santu Lussurgiu to Cabras, you will often come across prehistoric buildings in various forms. The Sardinia cycle tour is a little more challenging due to the frequent climbs, but the beautiful nature will make up for it!
Your bike tour along the West Coast of Sardinia begins in the vibrant town of Alghero. Once a Catalan enclave, Alghero retains a distinct Catalan charm, which is evident as you wander through its historic old town. If you're in the mood for a refreshing swim, the pristine sandy beach offers the perfect spot to dip into the crystal-clear Mediterranean waters. In the evening, take a leisurely stroll along the ancient fortress walls, where you can savor a breathtaking sunset over the sea.
Today marks the start of your cycling adventure. As you ride through the stunning Sardinian landscape, you'll soon encounter the Palmavera Nuragic complex, one of the island's most significant archaeological sites. Take time to explore the well-preserved prehistoric stone structures, offering a fascinating glimpse into Sardinia's ancient past. Continuing on, you'll reach the dramatic Capo Caccia headland, renowned for its towering cliffs and striking coastal views. The breathtaking scenery is sure to leave an impression, and with some luck, you may even spot monk seals or dolphins in the protected waters of the surrounding marine reserve. Your ride then takes you back to Alghero through the serene hinterland, where rolling vineyards and olive groves stretch across the countryside.
Leaving Alghero behind, you embark on a stunning coastal stage that will take you along a picturesque road, winding through hills and cliffs that plunge dramatically into the crystal-clear waters below. While the terrain is more challenging, the breathtaking views of the sea will more than reward your efforts. Your journey leads you to Bosa, a charming town nestled in the foothills of the surrounding mountains. Once there, take time to wander through its historic old town, where narrow alleys and elegant palazz tell the story of its rich past. In the evening, enjoy a leisurely walk along the palm-lined promenade by the River Temo.
Today, you have the luxury of choosing between two remarkable routes. For wine enthusiasts, the shorter route along the Malvasia di Bosa wine trail is an ideal choice. This scenic path takes you through lush vineyards, where you can savor the rich flavors of the local Malvasia white wine—a true delight for connoisseurs.
Alternatively, for those seeking a more adventurous challenge, the longer circular route will lead you deep into the hinterland. Cycling through dense cork oak forests, you’ll arrive at the quaint village of Montresta. Along the way, you’ll encounter another impressive Nuragic complex in Villanova Monteleone. On your return journey to Bosa, you’ll be treated to the striking beauty of Capo Marrargiu, with its dramatic rocky outcrops and hidden bays. Keep your eyes peeled as you ride—this area is home to the rare griffon vulture, and with some luck, you might catch a glimpse of these majestic birds soaring above their nesting grounds.
Today's stage of your bike tour along the West Coast of Sarinia takes you through a picturesque landscape of vineyards and olive groves. As you ride, you'll pass through the tranquil villages of Flussio and Tinnura, both renowned for their traditional handmade baskets and vibrant facade paintings. Continuing on via Sagama, the route winds through fragrant Mediterranean scrubland and rolling pastures, allowing you to immerse yourself in the serene countryside.
Just before reaching your destination, the village of Santu Lussurgiu, you'll stop at San Leonardo di Siete Fuentes. This historic village is home to the 12th-century church of the same name, a quiet testament to Sardinia's rich heritage. A short walk through the surrounding forest, with its ancient holm oaks and cork trees, will lead you to several natural springs.
Today, your journey begins in the medieval village of Santu Lussurgiu, nestled on the southeastern slope of the Montiferru volcanic massif. From here, you'll embark on a scenic round trip to Santa Cristina. Here you'll discover a fascinating Nuragic settlement, and the island’s most well-preserved Nuragic well temple.
On your return, make sure to take a slight detour to visit the Sos Molinos waterfall. It is one of the most stunning natural wonders of the island. The waterfall cascades gracefully for 30 meters over five tiers, creating a serene, crystal-clear pool at the base. It’s the perfect spot to pause, take in the beauty of the landscape, and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.
The final stage of your bike tour along the West coast of Sardinia runs mostly downhill as you make your way back to the coast, heading toward the picturesque Sinis Peninsula. Along the way, you'll have the chance to observe the graceful flamingos that inhabit the Stagno di Cabras inland lake. As you cycle past pristine white-sand beaches, be sure to take a refreshing break and dip your toes into the crystal-clear waters.
Take the time to visit the Church of San Giovanni di Sinis, one of the oldest and most important churches on the island. Here you'll get a glimpse into Sardinia’s early Christian heritage. Not far from here, you’ll encounter the ancient ruins of Tharros, a once-thriving city dating back to the Phoenicians – today only the ruins remain. Your journey concludes in the charming town of Cabras.
