Cycle tour along the Danube from Passau to Vienna

Your cycle tour along the Danube starts in Passau. The classic starting point for a cycle tour along the Danube is still Passau, the historic city at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers. The magnificent St. Stephen's Cathedral watches over the city, as do the Veste Oberhaus and the pilgrimage church of Mariahilf. Arrive early, there is a lot to discover!

The city of Passau is more than worth a stop. If you have already spent the night in Passau, you can set off directly on your cycle tour along the Danube. Cycle along the river to Obernzell with its castle and the ceramics museum, which is well worth a visit. The famous Trappist monastery in Engelhartszell is also worth a stop. You soon reach the Schlögener Schlinge: Here the Danube winds through 180 degrees - a special feature of the landscape. In the village of Au, you take a short ferry ride to your stage destination on the opposite bank.

The Danube Cycle Path takes you through the bird paradise of the Eferding Basin to Ottensheim. The rococo church and the Cistercian monastery in Wilhering are well worth a detour. The destination of today's stage is Linz, the capital of Upper Austria and European Capital of Culture 2009. A trip on the Linz City Express, which takes you to all the important sights, is well worthwhile. And of course, the obligatory slice of Linzer Torte is a must on your cycle tour along the Danube. A real treat!

Your stage takes you through the culturally and historically significant Machland region, where Enns is the oldest settlement in Austria. The baroque monastery of St. Florian, which requires a short detour, is well worth a visit. The legendary Strudengau region was once feared by Danube boatmen, making it all the more relaxing to enjoy the beauty of the landscape on your bike. You quickly reach the picturesque town of Grein, also known as the Pearl of the Strudengau. Incidentally, this small town is home to the oldest theater in Austria that is still in operation.

Today you reach the Wachau cultural landscape, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. The region is famous for its wine and fruit growing. Make sure you take a break at one of the many wine taverns! In the wine taverns, the winegrowers serve their delicious products directly at the winery itself. However, another highlight awaits you on this stage of your cycle tour along the Danube: the Benedictine monastery of Melk Abbey sits proudly on a hill. You will be able to recognize it from afar.

Your cycle tour continues along the Danube through the Wachau with its small wine villages. Not a blue wonder, but a blue church tower awaits you in Dürnstein. Make sure you take a souvenir photo of the symbol of the Wachau! You reach the end of your stage in Krems, which was first mentioned in a document in 995. Enjoy your last evening in the Wachau in the colorful old town. The art mile is lined with museums: caricature museum, art gallery, film gallery... There is something for every taste!

Leaving the Wachau behind you, you now cycle across the Tullnerfeld. The extensive, flat landscape has been filled in by the Danube over the centuries. Your cycle tour along the Danube is also a real cycling pleasure on the last few kilometers: you cycle directly along the Danube on wide cycle paths to the Danube Island and are right in the center of Vienna. Schönbrunn Palace, the Spanish Riding School, St. Stephen's Cathedral and the Giant Ferris Wheel are just some of the many sights in the former imperial city. If you want more time for Vienna, you can shorten the route from Tulln by train (not included).
