The North Sea Cycle Route from Emden takes you through small fishing villages and vast landscapes, but you will also get to know the well-known port cities of Wilhelmshaven and Bremerhaven. The flat cycle paths, the fresh sea breeze and the constant proximity to the rough, glittering sea make the North Sea cycle tour unique! You cycle along grassy dykes, watch huge steamers entering the harbor and catch sight of the small, swaying shrimp boats in the harbour. At lunchtime, you will enjoy the famous East Frisian tea at the Teetied and in the evening you will get to know the traditional seafarers' dish Labskaus. You will be greeted with Moin at any time of day and perhaps you will even speak a few words of Low German after your vacation.
Welcome to the seaport city of Emden! You should definitely explore East Frisia's largest city. Ostfriesisches Landesmuseum (East Frisian State Museum) will get you in the right mood for your North Sea cycle tour. Surely you know one or two East Frisian jokes? The Otto Huus has a whole house dedicated to jokes and its most famous storyteller, Otto Waalkes (a famous East Frisian comedian). Enjoy the typical East Frisian tea in one of the cozy tea rooms at the famous harbor and watch the large ships. On arrival at your hotel, an information meeting awaits you. Rental bikes, if booked, are available for you at the hotel.
On flat cycle paths, you will cycle past small farmsteads and huge wind turbines. Once you arrive in the tranquil fishing village of Greetsiel, the 600-year-old fishing port is the ideal place for your first break. You should definitely marvel at Greetsiel's fleet of shrimp boats! You will spend the night in Norden, the oldest town in East Frisia. One of the highlights of the North Sea cycle tour is the imposing Ludgeri church with its free-standing bell tower. If you are drawn to the sea again in the evening, Norddeich is home to the Haus des Gastes with its viewing platform, from which you have a breathtaking view of the sea and the city's sea of lights
With fresh, healthy North Sea air in your lungs, you cycle off – always along the dyke. Along the way, the small seaside resort of Nessmersiel invites you to take a dip in the rough North Sea! With the Niedersächsiches Wattenmeer nature park on one side and the expanse of green countryside with grazing flocks of sheep on the other, the cycle route takes you to Esens with views of the offshore islands of Langeoog and Baltrum – including fantastic panoramic views! Esens is unmistakably characterized by the bear, which also adorns the coat of arms of the small town.
Before you leave the region around Esens behind you, it's worth taking a break in Neuharlingersiel at the Buddelschiffmuseum. An exhibition of over 100 true-to-original, small and large models of maritime ships in bottles awaits you. A few kilometers further on, you will come across the dyke church in Carolinensiel on today's stage of your North Sea cycle tour. It is the only church on the coast that stands on a dyke. With the North Sea wind in your face, you cycle on to the green city of Wilhelmshaven. At the end of the day, don't miss out on enjoying a fresh fish in a harbour restaurant!
First you follow the banks of the Jade Bay. In Blexen, you cross the Weser estuary by ferry (not included). You will notice the Bremerhaven Havenwelten from afar. The modern and maritime district is home to various museums such as the Deutsches Auswandererhaus (German Emigration Center), the Klimahaus Bremerhaven 8° East and the Deutsches Schifffahrtsmuseum (German Maritime Museum). Take a harbour tour that takes you along the various sections of one of Europe's largest ports. After a successful day of cycling, try the popular Bremer Kluten (chocolate-mint candy) and, for those who like it heartier, a good portion of Labskaus (a local potato dish with beetroots and beef).
Before you cycle on flat, idyllic cycle paths through the beautiful countryside on your North Sea cycle tour, you have a challenge ahead of you: You have to pass the large overseas ports of Bremerhaven. You can watch the huge steamers sailing in and out at close quarters. You leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind you and cycle directly along the coast. Watch the seagulls plunging into the rough sea and the stormy waves just a few meters away. This is pure North Sea! In Cuxhaven, you should definitely visit the Fort Kugelbake. The historic naval fortress once defended the Elbe estuary. Not far away is the old navigation mark Kugelbake. It indicates where the Elbe ends and the North Sea begins and is now a portected sight.
Depending on the weather, you can enjoy an exciting ride on a horse-drawn wagon (Wattwagen) or a ferry ride to the Island of Neuwerk (not included). You will reach the small island via the Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park. The island's imposing red lighthouse can be seen from afar. It is the oldest building in Hamburg. Visit the mysterious Friedhof der Namenlosen (Cemetery of the Nameless), where unknown sailors were once buried, and enjoy the diversity of nature and birds. Alternatively, you can spend the day in Cuxhaven on a mainland cycle tour. Alte Liebe is one of many landmarks in Cuxhaven: It is a viewpoint and landing stage. Many stories tell the origin of its name, but which one is true is unclear. Decide on the version that you like best.
