Welcome to a family cycling holiday on Rügen, Germany's largest island! Rügen is home to endless beaches, untouched nature and seaside resorts with beautiful architecture. You start the tour in the old Hanseatic city of Stralsund. The train takes you into the heart of the island to Bergen. And then you're on your bike, cycling your way around Rügen kilometer by kilometer. On your family cycling holiday on Rügen, you will get to know the car-free island of Hiddensee and the port town of Sassnitz, visit the famous chalk cliffs, enjoy the sandy beaches of the Baltic seaside resorts of Binz, Sellin and Göhren and let the fresh sea breeze blow around your nose on a hike across the Mönchgut peninsula. Another highlight of a family cycling vacation on Rügen is a ride on the Rasenden Roland, the nostalgic narrow-gauge railroad that makes children's hearts beat faster.
The Hanseatic city of Stralsund is the starting point for your family holiday on Rügen. After checking in at the hotel, grab your bike and explore the harbor. The sailing ship Gorch Fock is anchored there. It now serves as a museum ship and gives visitors an insight into its more than 90-year history. A stone's throw away is the Ozeaneum. It presents different worlds of the Baltic Sea, North Sea and North Atlantic. Last but not least, take a stroll through the old town with its many historic buildings.
Ship ahoy! Take a ferry from Stralsund to the car-free island of Hiddensee. It's worth taking a walk to the lighthouse on the Dornbusch. On clear days, you can see as far as Stralsund and the neighboring island of Rügen. Or you can take a carriage ride! The island is also famous for its amber. Go in search of it on the beach! In the afternoon, the ferry will take you back to Stralsund.
Today on your family cycling vacation you're heading to the island of Rügen ! First, take the train to Bergen. Visit the Ernst Moritz Arndt Tower on the outskirts of the town and enjoy the view of Rügen before cycling along the Jasmund peninsula and the Baltic Sea coast. You reach your destination for today in Sassnitz. Treat yourself to a fish sandwich at the town harbor and explore the magnificent villas in the style of spa architecture and visit the beacon at the tip of the Sassnitz pier.
The chalk coast north of Sassnitz with the Königsstuhl is your destination today on your family cycling holiday on Rügen. You can reach it by bike or by boat. If you opt for the bike tour, expect to climb a few meters in altitude. The view of the Baltic Sea from the 118-metre-high Königsstuhl will reward you for your efforts. Alternatively, you can approach the cliffs from the seaside. A boat tour to the chalk cliffs is an impressive experience.
From Sassnitz you head to the east of the island. After a few kilometers you will reach the impressive buildings of Prora. These were built in the 1930s and, at 4.5 kilometers long, are among the longest buildings in the world. Just a stone's throw away is Binz, the largest seaside resort on Rügen. On your way to your overnight accommodation in Sellin or Göhren, a detour to the Granitz hunting lodge is a good idea. Situated on a wooded hill, the castle houses a museum. Climb the 38-metre-high central tower, from whose viewing platform you have a beautiful view of Rügen.
Swimming trunks or sturdy shoes? Both sound tempting! Enjoy a leisurely day on the lively beaches of Sellin or Göhren: Build sandcastles, splash around in the Baltic Sea, sit in a beach chair and eat ice cream. Or take a hike on the Mönchgut peninsula with its idyllic fishing villages and unspoiled landscapes. The highest elevation on the peninsula is the Bakenberg at 66 meters.
From Sellin or Göhren, the Rasenden Roland first takes you to Putbus. The foundation stone for the steam-powered railroad was laid at the end of the 19th century. Since then, it has connected the Baltic seaside resorts with Putbus, the youngest town on Rügen. Known as the White Town, Putbus was once laid out as a planned town in the neoclassical style. You cycle leisurely through the south of Rügen towards Stralsund. After crossing the Rügen dam, you are already at your destination.
