Travel report: Cycle tour on the Black Forest Panorama Cycle Route

From our guests Birgit and Andreas

Hello dear Radweg-Reisen team,

Enclosed is a short travel report of our Black Forest Panorama Tour from 16.06. - 22.06.2024.

Day 1: Arrival in Ettlingen

This year we decided at short notice to book the Black Forest Panorama Cycle Route from Radweg-Reisen. As we live in southern Germany in the border triangle, we took our own bikes with us. So we cycled from home to Basel and from there we took the train to Karlsruhe without changing trains. As we arrived in the early afternoon, we still had time to explore Karlsruhe by bike. Then we continued through the idyllic Alb valley to Ettlingen, the actual starting point of the tour. Here, too, we had enough time in the evening to visit the town and Ettlingen Castle. The hotel was also very centrally located, so we were able to do everything on foot.

Day 2: Ettlingen – Bad Wildbad

After a good night's sleep and a hearty breakfast, we continued on to Bad Wildbad. As the weather was cloudy to slightly rainy that day, we didn't meet a soul on this route, which went almost exclusively through the forest. But there were a few deer, hares and squirrels along the way. Pure nature park. A very relaxing tour, even if the views were not always so good. But the surrounding area also had a lot to offer. The hotel in Bad Wildbad offered the opportunity to visit the hotel's own thermal baths or to be pampered with wellness offers.

Day 3: Bad Wildbad – Freudenstadt

The next morning we took the cable car up the Sommerberg in glorious sunshine, a great start to a great day with lots of options. We opted for the treetop walk and were absolutely thrilled by the panorama. From the high plateau, the tour continued to Freudenstadt. Again, lots of forest landscapes and great views of the Black Forest from above. In Freudenstadt, the market square is well worth a visit, as are the trick fountains and the town itself. Due to the European Football Championship and Turkey's win that day, there was a lot going on in the town, as you can imagine.

Day 4: Freudenstadt – Villingen

On the rest of the tour to Villingen, we passed lush green pastures and orchards, through some woodland, farmsteads and old hamlets to Villingen. Not much needs to be said about Villingen, a great old town, nice pubs and so on...everything you need after a distance of over 70 kilometers. Despite everything, a day to relax.

Day 5: Villingen – Titisee

The next morning, we cycled through the Brigachtal and Bregtal valleys to Titisee. We were already used to the many forests, although they are always different. The dead-straight stretch of the Lange Allee and the detour to the beautiful Kirnbergsee beforehand rounded off the day. We were then able to watch the goings-on at Titisee until late in the evening, until the sun went down.

Day 6: Titisee – Freiburg

On the official last day of the tour, we were challenged once again on the way over the Rinken Pass (1196 meters) to Freiburg. On the way to Rinken, it started to rain, which unfortunately impaired our visibility. We even had to take shelter as it was pouring down so heavily. But we were prepared for anything and took it in good humor. On the descent to Freiburg, the sun came out more and more, so that we had a hot, sunny day in Freiburg. As we arrived in Freiburg early, we used the afternoon to explore the Freiburg area by bike, especially as we were already familiar with Freiburg itself.

Day 7: Departure from Freiburg

On Saturday, after a hearty breakfast, we decided to cycle the 80 kilometers from Freiburg back home to the border triangle. A great tour through the Markgräflerland and over the vineyards back to the Wiesental. We set off in glorious sunshine and ended up arriving home in the rain. Despite everything, it was a great trip back, rain or no rain, we were prepared for it.

Conclusion:

In total, we cycled 460 kilometers per person. A highly recommended tour for sporty and weatherproof cyclists who want to get to know the Black Forest in all its facets. Everything was very well organized by Radweg-Reisen and the accommodation was very central and yet quiet. We were greeted and served in a very friendly manner in all the accommodation, and the breakfast was always delicious and plentiful. Kudos to Radweg-Reisen for the organization, also this year.

Best regards,
Birgit and Andreas
