One of Germany's most popular vacation routes is the focus of a cycling vacation on the Romantic Road. It starts in Lindau on Lake Constance. Cycle through the Allgäu region, known for its picturesque valleys and impressive mountains, to Füssen and the Königswinkel, which got its name from the world-famous Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles. Your cycling vacation on the Romantic Road then takes you from south to north. Along the way, you will pass mountain peaks, river valleys, forests and meadows as well as many historic towns and monuments that will take you back to centuries past. From Füssen, follow the course of the Lech via Schongau, Landsberg and Augsburg. Not far from Donauwörth you meet the Danube. Your cycling vacation on the Romantic Road continues along the Wörnitz to Nördlingen and Dinkelsbühl. Rothenburg ob der Tauber, famous for its romantic medieval townscape, is just one stage away. Now following the Tauber, you cycle to Weikersheim, famous for its Renaissance castle, and get to know one of the most beautiful castles in southern Germany in Wertheim, at the confluence of the Tauber and Main rivers. From the Main quadrangle, you cycle through the Aalbach valley to Würzburg. The cycling vacation on the Romantic Road not only impresses with its varied landscapes and sights, but also with its culinary delights: Bavarian and Swabian specialties as well as delicious wines from Franconia and the Tauber await you on this 15-day trip.
Your cycling holiday on the Romantic Road begins in Lindau on Lake Constance. After checking in at the hotel, explore the picturesque old town of Lindau, which is located on an island, either on foot or by bike. Lindau's two landmarks are located at the entrance to the harbor: The six-meter-high Bavarian Lion and the new lighthouse. When visibility is good, you can enjoy the impressive panorama of the Alpine peaks on the other side of the lake.
Today you turn your back on Lake Constance and cycle through the Allgäu. Expect some climbs on the way to your first stage destination. Once you arrive in Oberstaufen, it's time to take a deep breath. The health resort is not only popular for its good air quality, but also for the natural healing method of the Schroth cure. The Allgäu is known for its traditional cheese production. In a show dairy, you have the opportunity to take a look at cheese production.
Today you cycle to the beautiful Alpsee lake. Take advantage of one of the bathing spots for a dip in the cool water before continuing on to Immenstadt. The town is affectionately known as Städtle by its locals. Enjoy a coffee on Marienplatz square. Back on your bike, you now have a few climbs ahead of you. You have reached the highest point of the stage at Oy-Mittelberg. At your destination of Nesselwang, you have the option of taking the cable car up to the Alpspitz, a 1575-metre-high mountain peak.
Today you cycle to the southernmost town on the Romantic Road on your cycling holiday in Füssen. After the first half of the stage, where you have to reckon with climbs, the remaining part is almost leisurely. After passing the Hopfensee lake, you reach the Forggensee lake and Füssen. The picturesque town is known for its old town and its proximity to the famous Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles. Pay a visit to one of the castles or stay in the town and immerse yourself in the Middle Ages in the High Castle. Spend the night in Füssen or Schwangau.
The opportunity to visit Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau still exists today. Both castles are extremely impressive, both architecturally and historically. While Neuschwanstein, which was never fully completed, has a fairytale feel and was built by King Ludwig II as a retreat, Hohenschwangau was used by the royal family as a summer residence. Both castles have opulent interiors and are well worth a visit. Cycle along fields, small lakes and forests on the Romantic Road cycle path to your destination for the day, Schongau.
You cycle along the Lech river through beautiful landscapes and picturesque villages. Along the way, there are always places to take a break and let your gaze wander over the mountain peaks of the Upper Bavarian Alpine foothills. Your overnight stay in Landsberg, with its old town walls, towers, churches and gabled houses, lies above the right bank of the Lech. In the old town, quaint inns serve Upper Bavarian and Swabian specialties. The town is located directly on the border between Upper Bavaria and Swabia.
Your cycling holiday on the Romantic Road takes you along the Lech again today. At Königsbrunn, you cycle through the Augsburg city forest, a nature reserve, to the center of Augsburg. The city went down in history as a wealthy imperial city. The Fuggers in particular, a merchant family, left visible traces of their influence. Equally interesting are the birthplace of Bertolt Brecht, the Roman Museum and the puppet theater Augsburger Puppenkiste. To round off the day, treat yourself to a refreshing beer from one of the traditional breweries.
Leaving Augsburg behind you, you first follow the Lech. You then have the choice between a shorter version and a longer version of today's tour. The former takes you along the Via Claudia Augusta to your destination for the day. On the second, you cycle further along the Lech until it flows into the Danube at Marxheim. Following the Danube, you reach the former Free Imperial City of Donauwörth at the confluence of the Danube and Wörnitz rivers. The old town with its colorful houses, narrow alleyways and historic buildings invites you to take a stroll followed by a stop at an inn.
Today you cycle through Wörnitz valley to the small town of Harburg. The castle of the same name will catch your eye from afar. You can experience the more than 900-year history of the castle up close on a guided tour. The tour continues through the Nördlinger Ries. The circular depression was formed by a meteorite impact several million years ago and is considered a geological peculiarity. The striking feature of your destination for the day, Nördlingen, is the town wall, which is still completely intact. The highest point in the town is the Daniel, the tower of St. George's Church, from where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the surrounding area.
Today you continue through the Nördlinger Ries and small towns to Dinkelsbühl. As soon as you arrive, you will realize that a little journey through time awaits you there too. As Dinkelsbühl survived both world wars unscathed, the town with its old gabled houses has a uniform medieval townscape - simply picturesque. Take an evening stroll through the winding alleyways, past the old town hall and St. George's Cathedral and stop off at one of the many restaurants to sample Franconian delicacies.
Your cycling holiday on the Romantic Road today takes you through small towns and cities to the epitome of a medieval German town - Rothenburg ob der Tauber. A stroll through the town is a must after your arrival! One of the most famous photo motifs is the Plönlein, a charming square surrounded by the Siebers and Kobolzellertor gates. You will get a special impression of the city on a walk along the old city wall. In the evening, you have the opportunity to take part in a night watchman tour.
Following the course of the River Tauber, you will get to know the lovely Tauber Valley, which stretches from Rothenburg to Wertheim. The Tauber Valley is known nationwide for the cultivation of wine. You can find out more about this at the wine museum at Brattenstein Castle in Röttingen. You reach your stage destination in Weikersheim. The pretty Renaissance castle, which originated from a moated castle, is particularly worth seeing. The magnificent interior and baroque garden are second to none and take you into the world of the former inhabitants of the castle.
The Tauber and the vineyards that accompany it are your constant companions today too. Via Bad Mergentheim, which boasts a historic old town and charming half-timbered houses, you cycle to the wine town of Lauda and the fencing town of Tauberbischofsheim. Your destination for the day, Wertheim, is surrounded by green, wooded slopes and is located at the confluence of the Tauber and Main rivers. The ruins of Wertheim Castle, already visible from afar, can be visited and offer beautiful views of the complex itself and the surrounding area.
The last stage of your cycling holiday on the romantic road lies ahead of you today. From Wertheim, you follow the Main for a few kilometers. You leave it at Bettingen to meet it again at the end of the tour. You cycle through meadows and fields through the Aalbach valley until you reach Würzburg. You can already see the Marienberg fortress from afar. The city's landmark has a history dating back around three thousand years - remarkable! As Würzburg is located in the middle of the Franconian wine-growing region, it is a good idea to take a Bocksbeutel with you as a souvenir. The flattened spherical bottle is the trademark of Franconian wine.
