Immerse yourself in a mountain world characterized by impressive rock formations and a special animal world on excursions to Fuente Dé and Bulnes. Upon arrival at your hotel, take the opportunity to explore this picturesque medieval settlement. Visit the Church of Santa Cecilia and the ancient ruins of the Castillo de Aguilar de Campoo, a castle complex that has stood for over a thousand years, perched above the town. Alternatively, you might enjoy a leisurely stroll to the nearby reservoir, located at the entrance to the town.
¡Vamos! Once you’ve collected your bike, you are ready to begin your adventure! You will cycle past the Aguilar reservoir and follow the River Pisuerga, passing through quaint villages and breathtaking landscapes, until you reach your destination for the day: Cervera de Pisuerga. Nestled at an altitude of approximately 1,000 metres, this village boasts a rich and storied past. Evidence of its history can be seen in the stone coats of arms adorning the houses, as well as in the Gothic Church of Santa Maria del Castillo. Particularly noteworthy is the burial chapel of Santa Ana, with its stunning Spanish-Flemish altar.
Your bike tour through Asturias, around the stunning Picos de Europa, will lead you along peaceful country roads in the Spanish region of Cantabria. Enjoy a series of unforgettable cycling moments as you take in the breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains within the Picos de Europa National Park. Your overnight stop for the next two nights is the charming town of Potes, located on the edge of the national park. You have the flexibility to design today’s itinerary of your bike tour through Asturias, centered around the majestic Picos de Europa, according to your preferences. We highly recommend an excursion to Fuente Dé, located in the heart of the Picos de Europa. While the ride to the village may challenge your endurance, the effort is undoubtedly rewarding. Once there, you can take the cable car (optional, not included), which ascends swiftly to the mountain station, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. Alternatively, you might choose to cycle to the historic monastery of Santo Toribio, situated near Potes. This medieval site is renowned for housing a relic of the Holy Cross, making it a significant destination not only for pilgrims but also for those with an interest in history and culture.
From Potes, you will cycle through picturesque valleys framed by rugged rocks and towering mountains, not far from the Río Deva and Río Cares rivers. Along the route, you'll seamlessly cross the border between the regions of Cantabria and Asturias. Continuing north of the Picos de Europa, you will arrive in Arenas de Cabrales, a town renowned across the region for its Cabrales cheese. This distinctive blue cheese, made from a blend of cow's, goat's, and sheep's milk, is traditionally matured in caves. Each August, the town hosts a lively festival in celebration of Cabrales, where the finest cheese in the region is selected and honored.
Today, your ride takes you to Puente Poncebos, where you will board the funicular (optional, not included) for the ascent to Bulnes. This charming mountain village, nestled in the heart of the Picos de Europa, was only accessible on foot until recent years. Upon arrival, take a leisurely walk to the Mirador de Pico Urriellu, a viewpoint offering spectacular views of the iconic Pico Urriellu, the most famous peak in the range. After enjoying the panoramic scenery, you can return to the valley station via the funicular. Alternatively, for those seeking a more adventurous experience, you can hike the 400-meter ascent via a trail (be sure to wear sturdy footwear!). You will spend the night once again in the picturesque town of Arenas de Cabrales.
Today, you’ll follow a scenic, winding route towards the Atlantic coast. Your journey culminates in the charming fishing town of Llanes, the final destination of your bike tour through Asturias and the Picos de Europa. After conquering numerous elevation gains, take the time to indulge in some traditional Asturian specialties. Savor the region’s famed cider, paired with a hearty fabada, a rustic bean stew that embodies the flavors of the area. Alternatively, unwind with a relaxing visit to one of Llanes' three beautiful beaches, perfect for a leisurely end to your adventure.
