Welcome to your Sardinia west coast bike tour. The second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea is perfect for a cycling vacation! On this tour, you will not only cycle along the coast, but also get to know the hinterland. The island is known above all for its beautiful beaches and coasts with turquoise waters, delicious wines and olive oils. During your Sardinia west coast bike tour, you will also get to know the Nuragic culture, which only exists on the island. Not much is known about this culture. It is assumed that it developed from the indigenous Sardinian population in the Bronze Age. During your cycle tour from Alghero via Bosa and Santu Lussurgiu to Cabras, you will often come across prehistoric buildings in various forms. The Sardinia west coast bike tour is a little more challenging due to the frequent climbs, but the beautiful nature will make up for it!
You start your Sardinia cycle tour in the lively town of Alghero. The former Catalan enclave is one of the most beautiful towns on the island. The Catalan influences are clearly visible on a stroll through the old town. Need a quick dip? No problem - you can plunge into the waters of the Mediterranean on the beautiful sandy beach. Stroll along the old fortress walls in the evening and enjoy the magnificent sunset with a view of the sea!
Today you get on your bike for the first time. You will soon come across the Palmavera nuragic complex, one of the most important sites on the island. After an exploration tour of the well-preserved prehistoric stone buildings, you cycle on to Capo Caccia. The spectacular headland with its steep rocky cliffs will inspire you. With a bit of luck, you may even spot monk seals or dolphins, which feel at home in the marine reserve around Capo Caccia. Cycle back to Alghero through the hinterland, past vineyards and olive groves, where the island's world-famous wines and olive oils are produced.
You leave Alghero with a heavy heart. Today's spectacular stage takes you along a picturesque coastal road. The hilly route along cliffs that drop steeply into the water is a little more challenging, but the view of the sea will make up for it. Your destination is the small town of Bosa, nestled in the surrounding mountains. Take a stroll through the historic old town and explore the small alleyways lined with old palazzi, some with magnificent façades. In the evening, stroll along the promenade planted with palm trees along the River Temo, which flows into the sea a few kilometers further on.
You are spoiled for choice, because today you have to decide between two routes. The shorter tour is perfect for wine lovers and connoisseurs, as it takes you through lush vineyards along the Malvasia di Bosa wine route. Be sure to try a glass of the delicious Malvasia white wine. The longer circular tour takes you into the hinterland through cork oak forests to the small village of Montresta. In Villanova Monteleone, another Nuragic complex towers above you. Cycle back to Bosa along the spectacular rocky outcrops and bays of Capo Marrargiu. Keep your eyes open today: With a bit of luck, you may spot a rare griffon vulture, as the birds of prey have their nesting grounds here.
Your Sardinia cycle tour today takes you past numerous vineyards and olive groves. You will soon reach the two idyllic villages of Flussio and Tinnura. Both villages are known for their handmade baskets and facade paintings. Via Sagama, you cycle through Mediterranean scrubland and pastures. Shortly before your stage destination of Santu Lussurgiu, you will come to the village of San Leonardo di Siete Fuentes. Here you will not only find the 12th century church of the same name. On a short walk through beautiful forests, some with ancient holm and cork oaks, you will also come across water sources.
From the medieval village of Santu Lussurgiu, which lies on the south-eastern slope of the Montiferru volcanic massif, you start a round trip to Santa Cristina today. Here you will not only come across a Nuragic settlement, but also the best-preserved Nuragic well temple on the island. Travel back in time at this picturesque location. On the way back, you should make a detour to the Sos Molinos waterfall. This is one of the most beautiful waterfalls on the island and plunges a total of 30 meters over five steps into a small pool.
The last stage of your Sardinia cycle tour takes you mostly downhill back to the coast to the Sinis peninsula. You can watch flamingos in the Stagno di Cabras inland lake. You cycle past beautiful white beaches where you absolutely must take a break for a swim. Visit the church of Giovanni di Sinis, one of the oldest on the island. You should also visit the ancient city of Tharros, of which only the remains remain. Your destination for today is Cabras
