The cycle tour along the Oder takes you from Frankfurt an der Oder to the sunny island of Usedom. Following the Oder-Neisse Cycle Route, you will explore the beautiful landscapes of North-Eastern Germany – many of which are protected. The first stages take you close to the river through the Oderbruch, a landscape full of character, and the Lower Oder Valley National Park with its species-rich flora and fauna. The cycle tour then leaves the Oder and leads through slightly hilly and wooded landscapes to the Szczecin Lagoon. On the Polish side of the lagoon, the Oder flows into the Baltic Sea. Unlike the Oder, your journey does not end at the lagoon. Take the ferry to the sunny island of Usedom. The last stage takes you along the beautiful island coast to your hotel. You can plan the last day of your cycle tour along the Oder as you wish. So you can enjoy the sandy beaches and imperial resorts of Usedom to the full.
Frankfurt an der Oder was once an important trading and Hanseatic city on both sides of the Oder. To this day, St. Mary's Church and the historic town hall bear witness to the wealth of days gone by. After World War II, the city was divided. Today, Frankfurt forms a European twin city with the Polish city of Słubice. Border traffic across the city bridge is lively. A short detour to the sister city should not be missed when exploring the city. If you arrive early in the day, you can cycle along a route of around 20 kmin the footsteps of Frankfurt's most famous son – the poet Heinrich von Kleist – and get to know the arrival city of your cycle tour along the Oder.
Past the picturesque Oder meadows to the north of the city, you leave Frankfurt. Soon there are smaller climbs to overcome. Enjoy a magnificent view over the Oder Valley from the ridge near Lebus. Then you reach the fascinating landscape of the Oderbruch landscape. The former inland delta was drained by the Prussian King Frederick II. The result was a fertile cultural landscape that is still characterized by wide meadows and fields today. Again and again you cycle along seemingly endless avenues. You will spend the night in Groß Neuendorf or Altlewin – both small villages on the edge of the Oderbruch.
On well-maintained cycle paths, the route of the cycle tour continues through the beautiful Oder landscape. You leave the Oderbruch and cycle into the Uckermark region. From your bike, you can enjoy the unique flora and fauna of the Lower Oder Valley National Park, Germany's only floodplain national park. The floodplain landscape is a paradise for water birds. In spring and fall, you can observe thousands of migratory birds. Stop at Stolpe Castle and climb the Grützpott – probably the strongest castle keep in Germany. From here, you have a wonderful view over the region.
The third stage of your cycle tour continues along the Oder for the first half of the day. Behind the small but fortified town of Gartz, the cycle path leaves the river, which now flows further into Poland. Now you cycle through a densely wooded, slightly hilly landscape. The villages in this sparsely populated region have names that are reminiscent of their Slavic origins. Several lakes along the route give you the opportunity to stop for a quick swim. The reconstructed castle tower of Löcknitz Castle offers you a beautiful view over the village and the Randow Valley at the end of the stage.
Today you cycle up and down through Western Pomerania, past colorful fields and wide, lush green meadows. Again and again you cycle through romantic woodland. Soon you will get a whiff of the sea air. Stop at Nowe Warpno Lake by the large observation tower. You have a wonderful view from here. The route now takes you through nature park Am Stettiner Haff along the unspoilt coastline. Take a relaxing break on the beach before cycling the last few kilometers to Ueckermünde. The former fishing town with a Swedish past is your stage destination. Take an evening stroll through the lovingly restored old town and enjoy the maritime flair in the town harbour.
You cycle the first few kilometers to Kamp, from where you take the ferry to Karnin on the Island of Usedom. Not far from the village is the Golm hill. From the highest elevation on the island, you have a wonderful view as far as Świnoujście in neighboring Poland. You will soon reach the magnificent imperial seaside resorts. Ahlbeck, Bansin and Heringsdorf still shine in their aristocratic splendor today. You then cycle through sparse forests and not far from the wide Baltic Sea sandy beach. The last two nights of the cycle tour along the Oder are spent on the Island of Usedom.
The organization of today on Usedom is entirely up to you. Explore the sun-drenched island on a round trip by bike. There is plenty to discover: idyllic harbours, picturesque inland lakes and 40 kilometers of fine, white sandy beaches. Or you can spend the day relaxing in one of the fashionable seaside resorts. Stroll along the promenades, walk across the piers and while away the time in one of the numerous cafés and restaurants. The only thing more relaxing is a day at the beach. Enjoy the warm rays of sunshine on your skin and refresh yourself in the cool waters of the Baltic Sea.
