Today you will explore the back country of Flanders. Your bike tour follows a south-westerly direction heading to Torhout. It is one of the oldest towns in Flanders dating back to the second century AD, as evidenced by Roman-era artefacts. Not only the Romans setteled here- the town has been inhabited ever since as evidenced by several remarkable castles. The neo-Gothic d'Aertrycke Castle is set amidst a sprawling landscaped park, while the origins of the moated Wijnendale Castle, now a museum, trace back to the 11th century.
From Bruges, today's stage of your cycle tour in Flanders leads past Damme to the North Sea. This charming town is well known for its Gothic town hall and its cluster of antique shops as such it is a popular destination for day trips. The town Knokke is your next landmark , a stylish seaside resort renowned for its luxury boutiques and art deco-style casino. Here you'll encounter a 12-kilometre stretch of fine, sandy beach a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the vacation vibes. To the east lies Het Zwin, the largest nature reserve along the Belgian coast.
In the evening, you return to Bruges.
Once again, you head towards the North Sea coast. Cycling through the picturesque polder village of Lissewege you make your way to the holiday resort of De Haan. Famously Albert Einstein lived here for about six months in 1933. The worlds longest tram line Kusttram spanning more than 68 kilometers stops here and connects all coastal town in Belgium. Spend the day relaxing on the soft sandy beach and take the opportunity to enjoy a refreshing dip in the North Sea.
