The Rhine has a long journey behind itself before it flows into the North Sea. You accompany the Rhine on this cycling tour in Holland for these last few kilometers from Arnhem to Rotterdam and can also follow it to the coast.
The Dutch are avowed cycling enthusiasts, so it is not surprising that the easy route is well signposted and will give you pure cycling pleasure. You will be enchanted by nature as you cycle along the polders, dykes and canals of the Rhine delta. De Biesbosch National Park is also a paradise on earth, and not just for the wildlife that lives there. A stroll through Dordrecht, Holland's oldest city with its historic inland harbours dating back to the 13th century, is a delight. Other historic towns such as Oosterbeek, Wijk bij Duustede, Buren and Gorinchem are in no way inferior. Well-preserved or restored moated castles with a rich history and finally the 19 windmills of Kinderdijk ensure that you will never get bored on your cycling tour in Holland. Rotterdam is the cherry on top and a real contrast with its skyscrapers and bustling port.
The cycling tour in the Netherlands begins in Arnhem, the capital of Gelderland province, a city steeped in a rich and eventful history. To the west, Arnhem borders the Veluwe, the largest forested area in the country, while to the east, expansive floodplains stretch out. For those arriving early, a visit to Burgers' Zoo is highly recommended. The zoo offers a unique experience, showcasing animals in environments that closely mimic their natural habitats, rather than traditional enclosures.
Hop on the saddle and cycle through Holland. Leave Arnheim behind to immerse yourself in the fun as you cycle through the scenic Veluwe region on a varied and enjoyable tour. The landscape is characterised by a mix of pine forests, dunes, tranquil lakes, and heathland. Following the course of the Lower Rhine, you’ll reach the 17th-century Amerongen Castle, with its picturesque gardens and exceptional collection of original 19th-century artefacts. Your journey culminates in the charming village of Wijk bij Duurstede, which was established on the site of the historic trading town of Dorestad.
Today, your cycling journey in the Netherlands takes you across the Lower Rhine, heading towards the renowned Dutch fruit-growing region of Betuwe. Passing through the historic town of Buren and along the Linge River, you’ll soon arrive in Leerdam, a picturesque town nestled by the river and surrounded by dykes. Leerdam is famous not only for the Leerdam cheese variety but also for its long-standing glass industry. For those seeking a shorter route, follow the Linge River directly to your destination, Gorinchem. The longer route, however, takes you via Vuren, past Loevestein Castle and through Woudrichem, leading to the fortified town of Gorinchem.
In the morning, take the time to explore the charming, historic town of Gorinchem. A ferry (not included in the price) will then transport you to Werkenam, from where you cycle through the remarkable De Biesbosch National Park, one of the few freshwater tidal areas in the world. This area, where the Meuse and Waal rivers converge, offers a truly unique natural landscape. A ferry crossing (not included) will take you to Kop van't Land, after which you’ll soon arrive in Dordrecht, the oldest city in Holland. The atmosphere in this vibrant port city is unmistakably special. Another short ferry ride brings you to your final destination of the day, Papendrecht.
The cycling tour in Holland now presents a unique photographic opportunity. The day's first highlight is the 19 windmills at Kinderdijk, dating back to the 18th century. These mills are remarkably well-preserved and have earned the prestigious designation of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
You can choose to cycle directly to Rotterdam via Slikkerveer, taking the ferry (not included), or extend your journey by an additional 30 km to reach Hoek van Holland, where the River Rhine flows into the North Sea. Here, you can enjoy a stroll along the vast sandy beach before returning to Rotterdam by train (not included).
