Take a delightful detour to Veitshöchheim, where you can explore the magnificent castle and its beautifully preserved rococo garden, offering a glimpse into a bygone era. As you pedal along, the landscape gradually transforms, and you approach the foothills of the Spessart, an area renowned for its dense forests and gently rolling hills. Your destination for the day is truly fairytale-like. It is believed that the tale of Snow White took place somewhere between Lohr and Bieber in the Spessart. While wandering through the enchanting town of Lohr, be sure to visit the historic fishermen’s quarter, a medieval district that has been carefully preserved and is now a listed heritage site.
Leaving Lohr behind, you embark on a leisurely ride through the Main Quadrangle, a region defined by the towns of Gemünden, Wertheim, Miltenberg, and Aschaffenburg. As you cycle, the Main valley begins to narrow, with the landscape becoming increasingly wooded, peaceful, and remote. Along the way, you’ll pass through Marktheidenfeld, nestled between the Main and the Spessart. Your destination for the day, Wertheim, sits at the confluence of the Main and Tauber rivers. Take time to explore its charming old town, where numerous half-timbered houses add to the area’s picturesque character. Accompanied by the boats gliding along the Main, you continue towards your destination, Aschaffenburg. As you approach, the tower of Johannisburg Castle stands out from afar. Once in the town, take your time to explore Aschaffenburg and its impressive historical old town.
Today marks the final stage of your bike tour along the Main, from Würzburg to Frankfurt. You bid farewell to Bavaria and soon cross the state border into Hesse. Take a leisurely break in the charming town of Seligenstadt. The town is home to an impressive monastery complex, complete with its tranquil courtyard and gardens, and the historic Einhard Basilica. Continuing onwards through the cities Hanau and Offenbach until you will eventually arrive in Frankfurt. While in the city, make sure to visit the Römer, the iconic city hall that has stood since the 15th century– it is a true symbol of Frankfurt.
