“Back there in the heath, where the birch tree stands....” this is how one of the most famous heath songs of Hermann Löns begins. The Lüneburg Heath is one of the most beautiful landscapes in Northern Germany. Untouched heath areas, grazing Heidschnucken heath sheep and countless diverse towns such as Uelzen, Soltau or Lueneburg characterise this journey. Cycle along excellent cycle paths through a mostly flat landscape – you will definitely not find any high hills here. As there are some slightly hilly stretches on forest paths and several stretches on sandy paths you should have a certain level of fitness for this cycle tour in the Lüneburg Heath.

Lüneburg Heath Bike Tour

Day 1: Individual arrival in Lüneburg

Lüneburg looks back on a long and proud history. Even the Neanderthals settled in the vicinity of today's urban area. In the Middle Ages, Lüneburg rose to become a flourishing trading town thanks to the salt trade. Today you can still marvel at the history of salt mining here in the German Salt Museum. A visit to Lüneburg is a remarkable experience as its old town is almost completely preserved.

Day 2: Lüneburg – Uelzen, approx. 55 km

You leave Lüneburg behind to explore the Lüneburg Heath. Your first stage takes you through the typical heathland to today's destination, Uelzen. The former Hanseatic town is now a bustling cultural place boasting a beautiful townscape full of half-timbered houses. Most famous, however, is the railroad station, which was redesigned by Friedrich Hundertwasser in his incomparable style.

Day 3: Uelzen – Celle, approx. 60 km

Today's stage takes you through the Südheide Nature Park. The description of the village of Scharnhorst from the 19th century aptly characterizes this region: 1 saddle-free farm, 5 full farms, 4 half farms, 3 cottages, 1 Brinksitter and 2 cultivators. The highlight is Celle with its beautiful old town and the Weser Renaissance castle.

Day 4: Celle – Hermannsburg region, approx. 40 km

Small wooden bridges along the river Örtze invite you to linger and enjoy the view of the Örtze valley. The river once used to be an important resource for transportation by rafting. The nearby town of Hermannsburg has existed for over 1000 years. It was founded by the Saxon Duke Hermann Billung who build his castle around the area of today's Peter Paul Church. The town subsequently developed through the settlement of market gardeners, small farmers and craftsmen.

Day 5: Hermannsburg – Soltau, approx. 50 km

Today, you will pass the memorial to the poet Hermann Löns on your way towards Soltau.
In Soltau several distinct churches built in the 15th century await your visit. The town also features an extensive toy museum and a notable old town hall. However, it is most widely known for the larges amusement park in northern Germany – the Heide-Park Soltau.

Day 6: Soltau – Schneverdingen, approx. 35 km

Today you drive from Soltau to Schneverdingen. On the way, you will stop in Wiedeholz, the site of the last knight's battle. There you will encounter the former heath farm Möhr.  Pay a visit to the Gothic church in Wolterdingen. Once you arrive in Schneverdingen, it is worth visiting the heather garden to get another overview of the 130 different regional heather varieties.

Day 7: Schneverdingen – Lüneburg, approx. 50 – 65 km

Today's tour takes you through partly untouched heathland. Juniper, broom and heather characterize the landscape, which is kept clear by grazing heather sheep. Your last cycling stage takes you back to the old university town of Lüneburg. In addition to the old town, the old harbor and the baroque town hall are also worth a visit.
