The Saar starts in the French Vosges mountains and makes its way through Lorraine and the Saarland to Rhineland-Palatinate. Saarbrücken, the starting point of our Bike tour along the Saar, is halfway along the route. You cycle through former coal mining areas and pass the Völklingen Ironworks, an impressive industrial monument. A visit to the fortified town of Saarlouis, built according to the plans of the French master builder Vauban, is also part of our Bike tour along the Saar, as is a ride through the Merzig region, which is famous for its apple wine. Another highlight of our Bike tour along the Saar is the forest-lined Mettlacher Saarschleife and the small wine town of Saarburg. The Roman city of Trier is the destination of the tour, which you can enjoy in a relaxed manner along the Saar with almost no inclines. Our Bike tour along the Saar is ideal for a short break or a long weekend. Thanks to the not-too-long stages, you will have enough time along the way to get to know the charming landscapes as well as the pretty towns and villages along the Saar.
Your bike tour along the Saar River begins in Saarbrücken, the capital of Saarland. The city that reflects a distinct French influence, shaped by its history of French rule. Start by exploring the charming St. Johanner Markt, then visit the historic casemates beneath Schlossplatz. As you immerse yourself in the local culture, savor regional specialties such as Dibbelabbes and enjoy a glass of crisp cider, setting the tone for the exciting days ahead.
The first stage of your bike tour along the Saar River takes you to the Völklingen Ironworks, a remarkable industrial monument that once housed a thriving ironworks. Today, it offers fascinating insights into the history of steel production, with its expansive processing plants and imposing blast furnaces. From there, continue on to your destination for the day: Saarlouis. This historic fortified town was commissioned by the Sun King, Louis XIV of France, who was so taken with its design that he named it in his honor. The remnants of its star-shaped fortress are still visible in the town’s old quarter, offering a glimpse into its strategic military past.
Today's route takes you through the scenic Merzig countryside, often referred to as the *Äppelkischd* (apple basket) of Saarland, thanks to its abundance of fruit orchards. As you continue along the Saar River, you will soon reach the iconic Saarschleife, a dramatic meander of the river, just before Mettlach. For a breathtaking view of this natural wonder, take the short hike up to the Cloef viewpoint, where you can enjoy panoramic vistas of the river and surrounding landscape.
Your destination for the day is Mettlach, a charming town with a rich heritage. Be sure to visit the Old Tower and the Ceramics Museum, which offers a fascinating look into the 250-year history of the renowned Villeroy & Boch ceramics manufacturer. The museum provides a unique insight into the artistry and craftsmanship that has made the brand a symbol of quality worldwide.
As you continue along the course of the Saar River, you will reach the picturesque wine town of Saarburg, located roughly halfway through your journey. From a distance, the ruins of Saarburg Castle command attention, perched high above the town. In the heart of the old town, you’ll find a 20-meter-high waterfall, once harnessed to power mill's during the Middle Ages.
The Saar River then converges with the Moselle in Konz before you make your way to Trier, the grand finale of your bike tour. As Germany's oldest city, Trier is home to the iconic Porta Nigra, a monumental Roman gate that serves as the city’s landmark. This impressive structure is the perfect starting point for a leisurely walk through the city, where you can explore other remarkable Roman ruins that showcase Trier’s rich heritage.
