Romantic, leisurely and varied: these are the attributes that make the cycle tour along the Werra and Fulda so exceptional. During this circular tour, you will not only get to know lively half-timbered towns with highly interesting history. You will also cycle through untouched, almost wild nature. The Fulda and Werra rivers meander through beautiful river valleys and low mountain ranges in the north of Hesse, taking you on a journey that will leave a lasting impression. Along the way, you will cross the Fulda by cable car. One highlight is certainly the Documenta city of Kassel. You could stay here for days just to explore the magnificent museum landscape and the World Heritage Site Bergpark Kassel Wilhelmshöhe. But Rotenburg an der Fulda, the Bartenwetzer town of Melsungen and the cherry town of Witzenhausen are also beautiful places to visit. The start and finish is marked by the beautiful town of Hann. Münden, whose charming old town is dotted with historic buildings adorned with richly decorated flat carvings. This is where the Werra and Fulda rivers meet and flow northwards together as the Weser. Alexander von Humboldt is said to have described the city of three rivers as „one of the seven most beautifully situated cities in the world“.
Welcome to the low mountain region of the Weserbergland, in the south of Lower Saxony. Here lies the half-timbered and three-river town of Hannoversch Münden, nestled between the Werra, Fulda and Weser rivers and on the German Fairytale Route and the German Half-Timbered Road. Visit the historic town hall, one of the most important buildings of the Weser Renaissance, the Guelph Castle and over 700 very well-preserved half-timbered houses. It's worth arriving early!
You leave beautiful Hann. Münden and cycle along the Werra and Fulda through meadows and fields lined with forests on both sides. You follow the Fulda southwards in loops, passing several locks. You cycle through the beautiful Fulda valley and soon reach Kassel. Take a walk through the beautiful Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, which has been a World Heritage Site since 2013. The castle, the Löwenburg and the baroque trick fountains are unique. The park is dominated by the colossal Hercules statue, the city's landmark. The museum world is also very active in Kassel. In addition to a visit to the documenta art exhibition, a stroll through the Grimmwelt is also very worthwhile. The Brothers Grimm spent a good thirty years in the city of Kassel between 1798 and 1841.
You leave Kassel at a leisurely pace through the Fulda floodplains and then follow the sweeping bends of the Fulda, which are caused by the low mountain ranges to the left and right of the river. The stage is easy to cycle and you will soon reach the fairytale half-timbered town of Melsungen. Follow the trail left behind by the Melsungen forest workers, the so-called Bartenwetzer, at the old stone bridge. Before they went into the forest to cut wood in the morning, they sharpened their axes and hatchets in the soft sandstone of the bridge. The cozy squares, which are lined with lovingly restored half-timbered houses that are 300 to 400 years old, are a wonderful place to relax. The Landgrave's Castle, built in the late Weser Renaissance style, and the Romanesque-Gothic town church are also well worth a visit.
You continue cycling through the beautiful low mountain range and river landscape along the Fulda. This stage of the cycle tour along the Werra and Fulda is once again extremely varied. Cross the Fulda with the unique Cyclist's cable car near Beiseförth. Under your own steam, you crank yourself to the other side of the river in a transport basket. Rotenburg an der Fulda lies in the middle of the slightly hilly landscape in the former borderland between West and East Germany. Stroll through the old town, where parts of the medieval town wall from the 12th and 13th centuries with two round towers have been preserved. The Brotgasse and the row of half-timbered houses by the Fulda Bridge are also particularly pretty.
The journey continues through the charming low mountain range with an altitude difference of around 250 meters between Fulda and Werra. You can also cover the distance by train (not included). Make a stop in the pretty climatic health resort of Sontra, also known as the mountain and Hansel town. The medieval town center with its many listed half-timbered houses and the ruins of Boyneburg Castle are well worth seeing. Eschwege, at the end of this stage and located directly on the Werra, is a real gem. The half-timbered buildings that characterize the townscape are richly ornamented and beautifully decorated. If you fancy a swim, you can do so at the nearby Werratalsee lake. You can also go canoeing, surfing or sailing here.
Mountains, castles, forests and water make up the charm of the landscape along the Werra. The destination of this stage of the cycle tour along the Werra and Fulda is the idyllic Bad Sooden-Allendorf. Nestled in the gentle low mountain range landscape, the town lies at the foothills of the Hoher Meißner, the king of the Hessian mountains. Salt and brine have shaped the history of the town for centuries. Visit the thermal baths or take a leisurely stroll through the alleyways with their well-preserved half-timbered houses.
You will soon reach the small town of Witzenhausen. The region is not only known as a cherry-growing area, which naturally promises a very special charm when the 150,000 or so cherry trees are in bloom. In Witzenhausen, you will find a beautiful town center with half-timbered houses, the Diebesturm tower, remains of the old town wall, the Renaissance town hall and St. Michael's Chapel. The short section from Witzenhausen to Hann. Münden is one of the most beautiful on the Werra cycle route. The route is mostly brisk with a view of the water, heading northwest.
After breakfast, your cycle tour ends along the Werra and Fulda rivers. Pay a visit to the Weserstein. It is located on Tanzwerder Island, a peninsula between the Werra and Fulda rivers. The stone marks the point "where the Werra and Fulda kiss and must atone for their names", giving rise to the Weser. If you do not wish to start your journey home immediately, we will be happy to extend your stay in Hann. Münden with an extra night.
