Those who appreciate the proverbial Bavarian Gemütlichkeit (sociability)can look forward to this cycle tour in Upper Bavaria. The metropolis of Munich with its rich artistic treasures is the start and end point of this tour, which takes you to the famous lake district. Lake Starnberg, Lake Tegernsee, Lake Staffelsee and Lake Sylvensteinsee are waiting to be explored and a trip to the Zugspitze is certainly a special highlight (not included).
Linger in the hustle and bustle of the Bavarian Metropolis, enjoy the view from the Olympia Tower and discover the city's history by taking a look at the amazing architecture. You can also visit significant museums, such as the Pinacothek art galleries, or the famous Deutsches Museum (a science and engineering's museum), in which one could spend days on end. Booked rental bikes are available at the hotel.
The first stretch of your journey will take you through Forstenrieder Park to Lake Starnberg. This deep and mysterious lake became famous due to the death of the fairy-tale king Ludwig II. There is a small chapel in memory of him. There is an abundance of fish in the lake, which you can savour freshly caught.
On beautiful paths you will cycle through original Bavarian villages. The group of lakes called Osterseen and Riegsee Lake will prepare you for today's destination, Lake Staffelsee. There are a total of seven islands in the lake, on which a passenger boat also operates. On your way countless bathing sites invite you to linger. The largest community here is Murnau which awaits you with the Schlossmuseum (castle museum) and Münter-Haus (a memorial for local artist Gabriele Münter).
First you will cycle through Murnauer Moos, a gigantic natural moor. Due to its geology and countless streams and lakes a uniquely diverse flora and fauna has been maintained. Afterwards you will reach today's destination, the old post station at the Via Claudia and the venue of the Olympic Games and ski world championships.
Today you decide yourself what you want to do. There's truly more than enough to discover in and around Garmisch-Partenkirchen. A trip up to the Zugspitze with the Zugspitzbahn cable car (not included) is definitely worthwhile, as it is Germany's highest mountain. An alternative is to leisurely discover the region by bike.
You cycle from Garmisch-Partenkirchen via Klais to the beautiful Lake Barmsee. You then have the option of cycling directly to your overnight accommodation or taking a detour via Mittenwald and Scharnitz to the source of the Isar. A total of 300 meters in altitude are covered to Scharnitz, from there slightly uphill through wild and romantic gorges and lush alpine meadows to the source of the river Isar. Return through the sunny high valley with magnificent panoramic views of the Karwendel and Wetterstein mountains via Mittenwald to Wallgau – a place where Bavarian traditions are still alive.
You cycle through the Isarwinkel region to Lake Sylvensteinsee, a fjord-like reservoir with an imposing bridge that often serves as a photo opportunity. Bad Tölz, the famous moor and brine spa, pampers the senses with its colorful facade paintings. The focal point is the spacious spa park, where you can stretch your cycling legs. One of the most famous guests who enjoyed spending the summer in Bad Tölz was writer Thomas Mann.
Through the charming landscape of Lake Tegernsee you will cycle to Gmund which offers a stunning panorama. You should definitely plan a boat trip here. Through Gaißbach valley you will cycle back to Bad Tölz. If you don't feel like cycling, you can also make the trip by train or relax in the thermal waters of the Alpamare spa.
Enjoy the unforgettable mountain panorama once again before returning to Munich. Discover the special flair of the city and relive the past few days while enjoying a fresh Maß – a true Bavarian beer. The popular traditional Hofbräuhaus is not the only place to socialize. Marienplatz with the new town hall is the center of the lively town life.
