For eight days, you will immerse yourself in the East Frisian landscape characterised by moors and the sea. Look forward to the finest sandy beaches, lighthouses, the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park, ship-in-bottle museums, crab cutters and seals. You will ride, hopefully with a tailwind, across the flat land, along dead-straight canals, through picturesque coastal regions with romantic harbours and endless dikes. A visit to Norderney is something very special! Cycle through the diverse landscape of the second largest North Sea island, visit the wreck of a shell dredger or simply take a walk along the long sandy beach. East Frisia is proud of its cultural heritage and cultivates it to this day. You can hear this immediately in the Low German language and the East Frisian humour. Your cycle tour through East Frisia begins in the charming city of Oldenburg, nestled between the North Sea, Bremen, and Ammerland. The vibrant atmosphere of this university town is invigorated by over 20,000 students. Yet you will still find peaceful corners in the winding streets of the picturesque city center.
Make sure to visit the historic Oldenburg Castle. It was constructed in the early 17th century on the foundations of a medieval moated castle. It is an outstanding example of Renaissance architecture. The adjacent garden is a delight featuring 200-year-old rhododendrons and ancient trees. Enjoy the blend of history and natural beauty as you embark on your cycling adventure!
Your first day in the saddle takes you through the enchanting Ammerland parkland, renowned for its abundant gardens and parks. Here vibrant rhododendrons bloom in splendid profusion. Your journey leads you to the spa town of Bad Zwischenahn, beautifully situated along the shores of the Zwischenahner Meer.
While in Bad Zwischenahn, don’t miss the Park of Gardens located in the Rostrup district. Here, you can stroll through 43 themed gardens and take in breathtaking views from the 20-meter-high observation tower overlooking the expansive 14-hectare park.
Your day concludes with an overnight stay in Wiesmoor, the youngest and second smallest town in East Frisia. Enjoy the charming atmosphere of this delightful town as you rest and recharge for the adventures ahead!
Departing from the climatic health resort of Wiesmoor, you’ll cycle toward the hidden gem of Aurich. The city has been called the secret capital of East Frisia as it used to be a royal seat. While in Aurich, be sure to visit the intriguing Sous Tower and the Upstalsboom Thingstätte, a national shrine for the Frisians.
From Aurich, continue along the Ems-Jade Canal connecting the cities of Emden, Aurich, and Wilhelmshaven since 1888. Your journey will take you to Emden, the largest city in East Frisia. Here, you can explore the charming old inland port, where museum ships are moored right in the city center.
In Emden, don't miss out on the Kunsthalle and the Ostfriesisches Landesmuseum for a taste of local culture. Fans of Germany's beloved comedian Otto Waalkes should also make a detour to Dat Otto Huus, dedicated to his life and work.
On this day of your cycling tour in East Frisia, the North Sea Coast Cycle Route will guide you through charming locales, starting with Rysum. Here, you can visit the church that houses the oldest playable organ in Europe, dating back to 1457.
Continuing your journey, you'll pass the distinctive yellow-red lighthouse of Pilsum before arriving in Greetsiel. Cycling on the island of Norderney is a truly unique experience – cars are banned on the island. Take a ferry to this stunning dune island, formed over time from sand washed ashore by ocean currents. The crossing (not included in the tour price) takes approximately an hour from Norddeich.
Once on the island, embark on a discovery tour along the salt marshes of the Wadden Sea and through the beautiful dune landscape.
Alternatively, you could spend your day at the seal station or cycling along the coast and through the Wadden Sea National Park. Here you can appreciate the region’s unique ecology. Seize the opporunity to visit the East Frisian Tea Museum in Norden, located in the historic Old Town Hall. This museum offers fascinating insights into the region’s rich tea culture. Enjoy your exploration of this remarkable area!
Continuing along the coastline, you’ll soon arrive at Norderburg Dornum, renowned as the most beautiful moated castle in East Frisia. From there, follow the cycle path through expansive marshland landscapes, leading you to Esens, which proudly identifies itself as the East Frisian chieftain's town or "bear town."
Climb the 54-meter-high tower of St. Magnus Church for breathtaking views of the offshore islands of Borkum, Memmert, and Juist, especially stunning on clear days.
Your cycling journey for the day will conclude in the quaint town of Wittmund, known for its distinctive red brick architecture in the heart of East Frisia. Here, you can visit the oldest fully preserved gallery Dutch mill in Germany, adding a touch of historical charm to your exploration.
On the penultimate day of your cycling vacation in East Frisia, hop back on your bike and set off toward Jever. This town is renowned for its beer, brewed here since 1848, making it a must-visit for beer enthusiasts. As you stroll through Jever, the impressive castle with its massive keep and the 61-meter-high owl tower will be visible from afar, offering a picturesque backdrop to your exploration.
Your journey continues to Wilhelmshaven, a city established by King Wilhelm I in 1869, which now serves as Germany's largest military and naval base. Take a leisurely stroll along the promenade on the south beach, where you can enjoy the coastal views, or visit the informative German Naval Museum to learn more about the region's maritime history.
