Welcome to the royal seat of Donaueschingen! Your bike tour through the Danube Valley begins at the very point where the Danube embarks on its journey towards the Black Sea. A must-see is the heart of Donaueschingen itself – the renowned source of the Danube. Situated within the castle grounds, between the town church and Fürstenberg Castle, this historic site marks the river's birthplace. The water that emerges here is rainwater from the Black Forest, which gradually seeps into the earth, travels underground to the edge of the forest, and finally resurfaces in Donaueschingen as the Danube’s iconic source.
Toss a coin over your shoulder into the source of the Danube. Legend has it that this gesture will ensure your return to Donaueschingen. With that done, it's time to set off on your cycling adventure! You’ll begin your journey along the Danube Cycle Path, heading towards Immendingen. This first leg is a gentle ride, providing a relaxed start to your exploration of the Danube Valley.
Not far from Immendingen, you’ll encounter the Danube sinkhole – a fascinating natural phenomenon. Continuing along the path, you’ll cycle through picturesque river landscapes to Tuttlingen, where you’ll spend the night.
Prepare for a day filled with natural grandeur as you journey through the heart of the Danube Gorge. The river winds its way through imposing, steep cliffs of rugged white limestone, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring landscape.
In Sigmaringen, you’ll be greeted by the magnificent Hohenzollern Castle, one of Germany’s largest city castles. Dating back to the 11th century, this historic fortress offers a fascinating glimpse into both the architectural splendor of the building and the storied history of the Hohenzollern family. A visit to the castle will allow you to explore its opulent interiors, the impressive armory, and learn about the rich history that has shaped this remarkable structure.
The Danube now meanders through a broad, open basin, and as you continue on your journey, a striking whitewashed castle comes into view, perched majestically on the landscape. In Scheer, the river takes a dramatic 180-degree turn, offering a scenic vista.
As you cycle on, you’ll be greeted by the charming Bartelstein Castle, beautifully situated beside the river. Another highlight along this stage of your tour is the enchanting hanging gardens of Neufra, located at the castle there. The cycle path runs parallel to the Danube, leading you onwards to Riedlingen.
Upon arrival, you’ll be captivated by the town’s picturesque half-timbered houses, which lend a distinctive character to the townscape. Your overnight stop here promises to leave a lasting impression.
Today, consider taking a detour to the former Benedictine Abbey of Zwiefalten, one of the most stunning Baroque complexes in southern Germany. With origins dating back to the 11th century, the abbey boasts a striking exterior, while its interior delights visitors with magnificent ceiling frescoes and intricate decorative details, making it a must-see.
Returning to the Danube, you’ll continue your journey towards Obermarchtal, home to another impressive monastery complex. Before reaching your stage destination of Ehingen, take a well-deserved coffee break in the charming, half-timbered town of Munderkingen, where you can relax and soak in the quaint atmosphere.
This stage of your bike tour through the Danube Valley will lead you through the enchanting Valley of the Ancient Danube to Blaubeuren. Here, you’ll encounter the renowned Blautopf, a striking karst spring and the entrance to an extensive cave system.
As you continue your journey, medieval castles and ruins will guide your way to the university town of Ulm. The Ulm Minster, home to the tallest church tower in the world. Its architecture and the panoramic views from its summit are inspiring.
Visit the town’s 14th-century Town Hall, a remarkable example of Gothic architecture. Wandering through the picturesque fishermen’s and tanners’ quarter you’ll discover charming bridges, crooked half-timbered houses, and narrow, winding alleyways that transport you back in time.
