A cycling holiday in South Tyrol means leisurely cycling on a good cycle path network and enjoying the excellent down-to-earth cuisine. Discover the diversity of the local wines and the country's cultural offers. In particular you shouldn’t miss the South Tyrolean State Museum with the famous Ötzi mummy from the Bronze age. You will be welcomed with warm hospitality and lots of sun on this cycling holiday in South Tyrol, which is also suitable for less-experienced cyclists.
Brixen is one of Tyrol’s oldest towns and for hundreds of years was the residence of Prince Bishops. In Stufels, the listed core of the town, relicts from the Stone Age have been discovered. The magnificent cathedral was where the bishop resided until 1964. The Clarissan convent and the Capuchin monastery are witnesses to the influence of Christianity in the town. Take some time to stroll through the city.
In the morning you first take a transfer to Dobbiaco at the entrance to the wild and romantic Höhlenstein Valley. Here you start cycling on the well-developed Pustertal Valley cycle path and cycle along the Rienz back to Brixen. You find yourself in the heart of the Dolomites with chalk-white rocks, dark forests and turquoise-blue waters. Via Bruneck, which is dominated by the castle of the same name, you reach the Neustift monastery complex.
You cycle along the Eisack river through vineyards to Klausen. Here it is not a mighty castle which rises above the countryside, but a Benedictine monastery which is still inhabited today. At the end of the stage, you have enough time to explore the provincial capital of Bolzano. Watch the hustle and bustle on Walther Square over a cup of coffee, or take a look at the famous Ötzi Mummy at the archaeological museum.
Today, the Lake Kaltern wine region is on the agenda. Castles and palaces, churches and monasteries, romantic little towns, idyllic bathing lakes and, of course, vineyards, wineries and wine, which you can learn a lot about in the South Tyrolean Wine Museum, lie along the way. Swim in the idyllic Lake Montiggl and visit the mountain museum in Sigmundskron Castle. There is certainly no time for boredom.
Along the wine route, you cross the largest fruit-growing region in South Tyrol. Passing numerous orchards, you come to Andriano, where the oldest winery in South Tyrol is located. Lana is home to the South Tyrolean Fruit Growing Museum. Alternatively, you can also cycle along the dam on the Adige cycle path directly to Meran. Once you arrive in the spa town of Meran, you will be spoiled by the gentle Mediterranean climate. The unique gardens of Trauttmansdorf Castle above the town are well worth a visit.
The reactivated line of the Vinschgerbahn takes you to Mals, the former town of seven towers. Today, only five towers remain. Along the Adige river, you head down into the valley through the Venosta Valley. The wood of the bare Sonnenberg mountain was supposedly used to build Venice. Glurns, one of the smallest towns in the Alps, is also on today's route and impresses with its fully preserved town walls.
Before the last stage a transfer takes you from Meran to the Jaufen Pass and on to Sterzing. If you wish, you can change to your bike on the Jaufenpass and enjoy the unique panorama during a brisk descent to Sterzing. From the Fugger town of Sterzing you cycle along wonderful cycle paths from the upper Eisack Valley to the former customs station in Franzenfeste.
