There are over 200 turquoise lakes surrounding the imposing alpine massif in the expansive Klagenfurt valley, the capital of the Carinthian region – a bike holidaymaker’s paradise. Lakes Ossiach and Wörthersee are two of the largest ones. Be it historical relics, droll animals or fairy-tale castles and forts - the countless number of highlights will make this cycling holiday through Carinthia unforgettable. In the crystal-clear lakes on both sides of the cycle paths you will always find a place for a refreshing dip in the cool water.
Discover the town where Drava and Gail meet. It is full of elegant buildings, graceful parks and has a beautiful thermal spa complex. Enjoy the combination of Mediterranean flair and Carinthian traditions. Its cosmopolitanism and enthusiasm for culture makes it stand out from the crowd. Reserved rental bicycles are parked at the hotel ready for you.
Accompanied by a view of the majestic castle ruins of Landskron, you’ll be leaving Villach. Cycle along Lake Ossiach in an unhurried fashion. In the eponymous town of Ossiach, there is a former Benedictine monastery with a splendid baroque church. Jump into the lake’s surprisingly warm water and enjoy the amazing view of Carintian’s mountains before cycling back to Villach.
Today you will cycle to Austria’s most popular lake, Lake Wörthersee. It lies embedded between mountains and hills and is one of the warmest alpine lakes. Why not make your first stop in the popular resort town of Velden. From here, the route will lead you through gentle hills into the Keutschach lake valley and alongside the Lend canal into Carinthia’s capital.
From Klagenfurt ‒ the Rose by Lake Wörthersee with its magical historic centre ‒ you will initially cycle to the Völkermarkt catchment lake. While en route, you’ll come past Ebenthal Castle and Grafenstein Castle, from where it is not too far to Lake Klopein. Water temperatures of up to 30°C have been recorded here. White churches atop mountain peaks and foresty regions shape the surroundings.
Today on your cycling holiday in Carinthia, you will make your final crossing of the Drau and cycle towards the imposing mountaintop church of Maria Saal. The small market town dates back to a roman town of the first century AD. The Kärnten Zollfeld expands in front of you and you will come past important monuments such as Herzogsstuhl and Hochosterwitz Castle. Once you’re in St. Veit, you will have reached today’s final destination.
Following the river Glan, you’ll be cycling to Glanegg. From far afield, you are welcomed by the castle ruin, which ‒ in medieval times ‒ checked the passage through the Glan valley. En route to Feldkirchen, you will come past the idyllically situated Lake Maltschach. For one last time, you’ll be cycling along the shore of Lake Ossiach to your destination, Villach.
On today's cycling stage you will cycle past Warmbad Villach and continue in a southeasterly direction. Your destination is the turquoise-blue Lake Faak. From here you have a wonderful view of Mittagskogel, one of the most prominent peaks in Carinthia. You cycle through meadows and green forest strips and finally reach the Drava Cycle Route, which brings you back to Villach.
