From the source right up to the heights of the Siegerland region and beyond – to the mouth of the Rhine 225 km away – the Lahn Valley has a lot of wonderful surprises for you. Starting in the university town of Marburg, with its charming historic quarter, the Lahn cycle path follows the winding river. Between Taunus and Westerwald, the green fields along the Lahn are slowly replaced by mountains. Over hundreds of years, the Lahn has created its route through the valley. The Lahn Cycle Path follows this route through varied countryside and attractive towns such as Weilburg, Limburg and Bad Ems. Shortly before the river joins the Rhine, you will be able to enjoy a little detour to the legendary Lorelei.
Your tour along the Lahn cycle path begins in the university town of Marburg. Wander up and down the many steps of the historic quarter and along the windy streets lined with timer-frame houses. Landgrave Castle looms high and always visible above the town. A masterpiece of Early Gothic architecture is St. Elisabeth's Church. Reserved rental bicycles are parked at the hotel ready for you.
Cycling through the wide, quiet Lahn Valley you will reach Wetzlar, an excellent example of wooden-framed architecture as well as impressive baroque buildings. Even today, the town centre presents itself as it did at the end of the 18th century, when Goethe already felt very much at home here. Buildings from various historical eras and the seven-arched bridge over the Lahn define the townscape. The city's landmark is the cathedral, which was never completed although builiding started in the 14th century.
The Lahn cycle path continues, to take you along the river between Taunus and Westerwald. During your breaks enjoy the beautiful views of two low mountain ranges. You'll recognise Weilburg by its extensive castle grounds – the eastern half stretches to almost 400 m. The town has a very rare feature – a shipping tunnel which is almost 200 m long.
From Weilburg you cycle always along the river to Limburg. The medieval buildings of the old town are almost completely preserved, which makes it very worth seeing. The famous cathedral is visible from a distance. In a magnificent setting, its seven towers overlook the city on the rocks above the Lahn. On the market square you can best enjoy the cozy atmosphere of the small town after the day on the bike.
Today's stage is one of the scenic highlights on the Lahn Cycle Path: The tour takes you away from the traffic through an impressive valley landscape. Two climbs will challenge your strength. If you want, you can shorten one by taking the train. Why not take a rest in one of the historic inns along the Lahn before you roll into the famous spa town of Bad Ems. You will immediately recognize the most famous building of the destination, the baroque Kurhaus.
Today you should once again bundle your energy and start the royal stage into the Rhine Valley to the Lorelei. The famous rock offers a unique panoramic view of the Rhine Valley and a very special atmosphere that has inspired poets and musicians for centuries. You will cover the distance to Coblenz comfortably on the ship. On the way you can still visit one of the countless castles on the banks of the Rhine.
