A classic tour with a difference: The Danube cycle path is undoubtedly one of the most popular cycle paths ever. On this cycling holiday from Passau to Vienna though, the daily kilometres appear at first glance to be more, but because the terrain is so flat, they feel like less. The quicker you cycle, the earlier you'll arrive. Spare time can be invested in a closer look around Vienna. You can expect a cycling holiday along the Danube with all of the highlights between Passau and Vienna and extra time in the Austrian capital! Take two whole days to explore its castles, museums, market squares and winding streets.
This town of three rivers bids you welcome. Here where Ilz, Inn and Danube merge you can see the three different colours of riverwater gradually mix to one. The green Inn, black Ilz and blue Danube are a spectacle to be seen right from the word go. St. Stephen's Cathedral and the many steep little streets in the historic quarter are a must!
You leave Passau to cycle to Engelhartszell. You have to visit the abbey church there - in the Rococo style. At Schlögen, the Danube winds its way twice through very tight curves. This section is known as the Donauschlinge (Danube loop) and used to known as one of the most dangerous stretches for boats. Today, the course of the Danube has been quietened and you can enjoy this breath-taking countryside without concern!
The cycle path to Linz in Upper Austria takes you through the vegetable growing region of Eferdinger Becken. Leave the market communities of Aschach, Ottensheim and Wilhering behind you and then have enough time for lunch in Linz. Find a comfortable seat in any of the many pubs in the historic old quarter or visit the pilgrimage basilica in Pöstlingberg. Finally, cycle to Enns.
Today you will follow the Danube to Grein. The charming baroque town’s historic theatre is Austria’s oldest active theatre. Castle Greinburg, which is located directly on the riverbank, houses the Austrian maritime museum. The staterooms, the arcade court and the chapel are also worth seeing. You will then leave Upper Austria behind you and cycle to Marbach and the wine district.
On today’s stage you will cycle through Lower Austria and Melk – the gate to Wachau region. The Benedictine Abbey Melk thrones above the Danube here. As one of the largest Baroque monasteries, it is a UNESCO world heritage site. Then you will cycle to the Wachau region, past small towns, orchards and vineyards. The 1000-year-old town Krems lies on route. A wine tasting rounds off your action-packed day.
Halfway through today’s stage you reach the Roman town Tulln. Located inmidst orchards, Tulln is also known as town of flowers, or town of roses. After a short stay you will cycle further to Vienna. St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the town hall and the Vienna Hofburg in the city centre, as well as Schönbrunn Palace with the palace gardens and the Gloriette are absolute highlights of the capital city.
Two action-packed days await you in the royal and imperial metropolis. Take a bicycle excursion in and around Vienna’s vineyards or explore the countless sights. Take a ride through the historical city centre in a traditional Fiaker horse-drawn carriage and enjoy a slice of Sacher cake in a classic Viennese coffee house. The possibilities are endless.
A cosmopolitan city like this one deserves more time, which is why you can go on a discovery tour again today. There is so much to see. The Hundertwasser House or the big wheel in Prater attract many visitors every year. The baroque Belvedere Castle is also a real highlight. If you fancy a day in the water you can go for a swim on the swimming island Gänsehäufel. In the afternoon the coffee houses await or you could always try a local Austrian snack in a Viennese wine cellar!
