The bike tour along the river Saar and river Moselle combines two meandering rivers. In Saarbrücken French flair is still present, before you head along the Saar and delve into the industrial history of the region and then reach the natural highlight of the Saar Bend. In Treves ancient history comes to life, before wine and vineyards come to the fore for the rest of the trip. You will follow along the meandering Moselle Cycle Path through all the well-known towns and villages, before reaching the Deutsches Eck in Coblenz from where you will be able enjoy a view over the Rhine Valley. The tour is also suitable for those unused to cycling long distances.
Your tour begins in the capital of Saarland, in the very west of the republic. For centuries the focus of German and French interests, it was completely destroyed in 1677 and rebuilt as a baroque city. Visit the impressive castle and its surroundings or stroll through the heart of the St. Johann district. Booked rental bikes are available at the hotel.
Along the Saar River you cycle to Saarlouis, which used to be a fortress town. Then the industrial history of the region is on the program. In Völklingen, the ironworks have been declared a World Heritage Site and a visit here is like an adventure. The dark corridors take you far inside, then up again to the viewing platform at the blast furnace. Finally, you will reach Mettlach at the Saar Loop.
In the morning, hike to the viewpoint of the Saar Loop; the fantastic panoramic view is worth it! Then continue on the Saar cycle path through beautiful woodland. In the distance you can already see the castle, which rises above the town of Saarburg with its winding alleys. In Treves you should take a look at the historic city center, or pay a visit to the Roman Porta Nigra.
In the Moselle Valley, you can't miss the Roman past and wine culture. Today, a special relic of antiquity awaits you: the Villa Rustica in Mehring has been faithfully reconstructed and shows the way of life of the Romans on their estates. Try a noble droplet in Neumagen-Dhron, the oldest wine village in Germany.
In the half-timbered town of Bernkastel-Kues, you can admire the picture-book marketplace before cycling on to Zeltingen, a traditional winegrowing village with monastery courtyards in Mosel baroque style. Along the Moselle, you will pass through Kröv with its famous Kröver Nacktarsch vineyard to Traben-Trarbach. This small town is a jewel in classicism and art nouveau. The landmark of the town is the widely known bridge gate.
About Zell it goes to Beilstein, the Briar Rose of the Moselle. The view is really like a fairy tale landscape! The village has hardly changed for centuries, so that the medieval flair has been preserved. Soon you will reach Cochem, which is surrounded by rolling hills. The home of the red Moselle vineyard peach has a picturesque center and the old Reichsburg Castle attracts many visitors year after year.
Continue on well-maintained paths to Coblenz. Don't forget to look at one of the oldest half-timbered houses in Germany, the Abteihof from 1320, in Kobern-Gondorf! A detour to the famous Eltz Castle is also recommended. Finally, cycle to the Deutsches Eck in Coblenz. Let your vacation end comfortably in the old town, which is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
