The cycling tour along the Weser is for trained cyclists who are not afraid of longer stages and still value sightseeing. You start your bike tour where the Weser has its origin. In Hann. Münden, the Werra and Fulda rivers flow into each other and merge into one of the most important rivers in Germany, the Weser. You cycle along the mountain ranges of the Weserbergland and reach the vast land of the North German Plain at Porta Westfalica. Yours is Germany‘s smallest state and the former Hanseatic city of the same name, Bremen. What makes a bike tour along the Weser so special? These are the excellently developed bike paths through idyllic and tranquil nature, sleepy villages with breathtakingly beautiful marketplaces, magnificent manor houses and castles. The architectural styles from Romanesque to Gothic to the important keyword of the so-called Weser Renaissance will accompany you during the entire cycling tour on the Weser for sporty people.
You start your cycling tour on the Weser for sporty people amidst the wooded hills of the Weserbergland. In Hann. Münden, visit the town hall with its fantastically magnificent Weser Renaissance-style façade. If you can't get enough of this architectural style, we recommend the Guelph Castle, which also houses the town museum. The Tilly Ski Jump offers a beautiful view over the city and the hills of the surrounding forests. You can see where the Weser originates at the so-called Weserstein. There is a lot to see and experience in the pretty town of Hann. Münden!
The first stage of the cycling tour on the Weser for sporty people is about to begin. You follow the winding course of the Weser, past fairytale castles and fortresses. Pretty little towns such as Bad Karlshafen and Beverungen, whose history dates back to the time of Charlemagne, are on your way. To your right are the foothills of the second largest contiguous forest mountain range in northern Germany. The red sandstone of the Hanoverian cliffs glows red. Corvey Abbey near Höxter was founded by a son of Charlemagne in 822 and is well worth a visit. Holzminden is the town of scents and flavours. At the end of the 19th century, vanillin was successfully synthesised here.
You cycle through one of the most scenic sections of the Oberweserbergland. The lush green meadows of the Weser floodplains are your constant companion. You soon reach the Münchhausen town of Bodenwerder. Shortly afterwards, you will follow in the footsteps of the Pied Piper in Hamelin. Take a worthwhile stroll through the splendid and perfectly restored old town with its many richly decorated half-timbered and sandstone buildings from the Weser Renaissance. Fortify yourself with a traditional Bregenwurst sausage with kale, flambéed rat's tails or Weser pancakes. Spend the night in Rinteln, an architectural gem.
The Weser Cycle Route now leaves it up to you to decide what this first part of the stage should look like. One option is to cycle via Bad Oeynhausen, where the German Fairytale and Weser Legend Museum is located, to the legendary Porta Westfalica. The Weser leaves the Weser Uplands between the Wiehengebirge and Weser Mountains and flows northwards into the North German Plain. The landscape now changes dramatically, the hills and forests are now behind you. In front of you is a landscape of marshes and geest. You should plan a visit to the glassworks tower in Gernheim and the water and windmills in Harrienstedt and Großenheerse.
Take your first break in Nienburg, the cosy town on the German Half-Timbered Road. In the Middle Ages, Nienburg was an important fortress town at the Weser crossing. Today, lovingly restored half-timbered buildings and patrician houses await you. Hopefully you won't leave Nienburg without trying bear paws, a sweet that has been produced here since the 18th century. You will spend the night in Verden an der Aller, which lies before the mouth of the Weser. The old town centre is, how could it be otherwise, dotted with pretty half-timbered buildings. Visit the cathedral, which was a wooden church in Charlemagne's time and is now a three-aisled Gothic hall church.
The last, considerably shorter stage of the cycling tour on the Weser for sporty people takes you to the old Hanseatic city of Bremen. Before that, you should take a look at Erbhof Castle in Thedinghausen. It is one of the outstanding examples of the Weser Renaissance in the Middle Weser region. To round off your cycle tour along the Weser, take a harbour tour in Bremen and visit Bremen's Roland statue in front of the town hall before setting off on your return journey. We will of course be happy to extend your stay in beautiful Bremen.
