Welcome to Breisgau! Your cycling tour begins in Freiburg and takes you all the way to the Neckar River in Heidelberg. Freiburg is located in one of the sunniest regions of Germany. After checking in at your hotel, take a stroll through the alleys of the lively old town and pay a visit to the impressive cathedral. A special feature of Freiburg are the Bächle. According to legend, whoever accidentally steps into one of the watercourses must marry a Freiburg resident.
The first stage of your cycling tour from Freiburg to Heidelberg takes you to Breisach. Even from a distance, the Cathedral of St. Stephen, towering over the Rhine plain, catches your eye. The church, which is characterized by Romanesque and Gothic elements, holds numerous treasures - very much worth seeing! The nearby town of Vogtsburg is the largest wine-growing community in Baden-Württemberg and has the only corkscrew museum in Germany. You will spend the night in Breisach, in Vogtsburg or in Vogelgrun on the French side of the Rhine.
On the saddle again, today's route takes you through the vineyards of the Kaiserstuhl to Ettenheim. Expect the one or other larger incline on the first kilometers. Surrounded by rolling vineyards, the baroque town lies at the transition from the Rhine plain to the Black Forest. The historic town center is characterized by representative baroque buildings. On the outskirts of the town is the Heubergturm, from whose viewing platform you have a panoramic view of the Vosges, the Kaiserstuhl and the Black Forest. Treat yourself to Baden wine from the surrounding vineyards to round off the day.
Today's stage of your cycling tour from Freiburg to Heidelberg takes you first to Offenburg. From there you have the opportunity to take a comfortable train ride (not included) to the French city of Strasbourg. The capital of Europe is not only the seat of numerous European institutions, it also impresses with many picturesque corners in the tanners' quarter La Petite France and beautiful winstubs that invite you to enjoy Alsatian wines and delicacies. By train (not included) you will return to Offenburg, your overnight destination today.
From Offenburg you cycle north along the edge of the Rhine plain and reach the spa town of Baden-Baden through wide fields. The place is known for its thermal baths, the Kurhaus and its world-famous casino. The latter even left a culinary impression: the Baden-Baden Roulettekugeln, a praline specialty. Back on the bike, you cover the last kilometers to Rastatt. The baroque town lies in the Upper Rhine plain on the small river Murg. Visit the stately residential palace, whose garden front measures a proud 230 meters and is visually reminiscent of Versailles Palace in France.
You will leave Rastatt behind and set course for Karlsruhe. The fan-shaped baroque residential city was only built about 300 years ago. The heart of the city is the wide Schlossplatz with its three-winged palace. Inside is the Badisches Landesmuseum, which presents you with cultural history of the last 50,000 years – impressive! Just a few kilometers away, you will reach your destination for the day, the pretty little town of Ettlingen.
Your cycling tour from Freiburg to Heidelberg takes you across the Baden-Württemberg border into Rhineland-Palatinate. The destination of the stage is the old imperial city of Speyer, which is one of the oldest cities in Germany. Experience a piece of the city's eventful history at every turn. Be it the imposing, unusually high cathedral, which is one of the largest preserved Romanesque churches in the world. To climb is the southwest tower, from which you have a magnificent panoramic view over Speyer and the surrounding area.
On the last stage of your cycling tour from Freiburg you will cycle to your destination Heidelberg. After saying goodbye to the Rhine, you will first head to Schwetzingen. Leave your bike and walk through the baroque garden of the famous Schwetzingen Castle, which is also worth visiting. Continue on to Heidelberg. The city on the Neckar is dominated by the ruins of Heidelberg Castle. But also the old town with its numerous churches and historic buildings is worth seeing.
