Healthy North Sea air, the sound of the waves and seemingly endless views over the sea - our trip on the North Sea Cycle Route from Jutland offers all passionate cyclists and those who want to become one the full program of relaxation! Thatched houses, sheep grazing on dykes, red and white striped lighthouses and the interplay between high and low tide are just some of the many impressions you will gather on our trip on the North Sea Cycle Route from Jutland. You start in Esbjerg on the Danish North Sea coast. After leaving the south-western part of Jutland and Denmark's youngest and oldest city behind you in Esbjerg and Ribe, you pass the border with Germany almost unnoticed. Before you follow the North Sea coastal cycle path southwards, a good dose of island feeling is of course a must. You will get to know the Queen of the North Sea - Sylt - as well as the Danish island paradises of Rømø and Fanø. Continue via the not so gray town of Husum to the Dutch town of Friedrichstadt and an excursion to the seaside resort of St. Peter-Ording. On our trip on the North Sea Cycle Route from Jutland, take a guided mudflat hike that will introduce you to the fascinating world of the seabed. Via Dithmarschen, you reach the Elbe in Brunsbüttel, whose course takes you to the heart of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg.

Day 1: Individual arrival in Esbjerg

Your bike tour on the North Sea Cycle Route in Jutland begins in Esbjerg, Denmark. The town was founded a good 150 years ago. From the top of Vandtårnet you have a wonderful panoramic view of the city, the harbor and the island of Fanø. Or how about a trip to Sædding Beach? It is overlooked by the striking sculpture group The Man by the Sea.

Day 2: Esbjerg - Ribe, approx. 35 / 65 km + excursion to the island of Fanø

Take a detour to the island of Fanø today, which you can easily reach by ferry (not included). Cycle around the island and experience a mix of dunes, beach forests and mudflats. With a bit of luck, you will discover amber washed up on the kilometer-long western beach. Back on the mainland, you head to Ribe, the oldest town in Denmark. In the middle of the old town is Ribe Cathedral with its two unequal towers, which can be seen from afar. The Ribe VikingeCenter documents that Ribe was already inhabited in Viking times.

Port of Ribe

The harbor in Ribe

Day 3: Ribe - Havneby (island of Rømø), approx. 45 km

From Ribe you cycle back to the North Sea. Cycle over the Rømødæmningen road embankment to the Wadden Sea island of Rømø on today's stage of your journey on the North Sea Cycle Route in Jutland. Rømø's beaches together form the largest sandy beach in Northern Europe. Impressive! Discover the Kommandørgården, the whalebone fence and the Rømø church dating back to 1200 on a tour of the island. You will spend the night in Havneby, the island's main town.

Day 4: Havneby - Sylt - Niebüll / Schlüttsiel, approx. 20 / 35 km + ferry and train ride

From Havneby, take the ferry (included) to the island of Sylt. A network of cycle paths over 200 kilometers long offers many opportunities to get to know the island on a shorter or longer tour. Organize your time on Sylt however you like before taking the train (included) over the Hindenburgdamm to Niebüll. Due to its proximity to Denmark, Danish and Frisian culture come together in this small town. You can find out more about the everyday and economic life of the North Frisians at the Friesian Museum.

Day 5: Niebüll - Husum, approx. 55 / 40 km

On the North Sea Cycle Route from Jutland, you cycle directly along the coast. Take a detour to Hamburger Hallig on the way. The small peninsula is very easy to reach by bike. At the end of the Hallig, a restaurant invites you to stay a while and enjoy the views. In Husum, your destination for the day, the town's most famous son, Theodor Storm, is commemorated at every turn. The writer once described Husum as a grey town by the sea. Far from it, because the colorful and lively port city is neither grey nor monotonous.

Husum Castle

Day 6: Husum - Tönning / Lunden, approx. 35 / 40 km

Today you are mainly on the road away from the North Sea. From Husum, you first cycle to Friedrichstadt. The town center will remind you of a trip to a small Dutch town. When the town was founded in the 17th century, Dutch immigrants settled here, bringing with them their architectural style and knowledge of canal construction. Leave your bike and take a walk along the canals. Continue to Tönning, where the Multimar Wattforum brings you closer to the world of the Wadden Sea. You will spend the night in Tönning or Lunden.

Port of Tönning

Day 7: Excursion to St. Peter-Ording, approx. 55 / 65 km + train ride

After breakfast, take the train to St. Peter-Ording. The seaside resort is famous for its 12-kilometre-long sandy beach. Watch kite surfers being pulled over the waves by the wind, treat yourself to a sunbath or take part in a mudflat hike. Cycle towards the red and white striped Westerhever lighthouse, which catches your eye from afar. An ideal photo opportunity! Enjoy the wonderful view of the surrounding area from its viewing platform before cycling back to Tönning or Lunden.

Beach St. Peter Ording

Day 8: Tönning - St. Michaelisdonn, approx. 60 / 70 km

From Tönning, it's back to the North Sea. A first stop is worthwhile at the Eidersperrwerk, the largest coastal protection structure in Germany. Your next stop is Büsum. The town has a green beach that stretches for miles, where you can enjoy a wonderful sandwich topped with Büsum crabs. From the sea you cycle into Dithmarschen. You pass Meldorf with its cathedral, which can be seen from afar and is built in the brick Gothic style typical of northern Germany. You reach your destination for the day in St. Michaelisdonn. The town's landmark is Edda, a Dutch windmill.

Day 9: St. Michaelisdonn - Glückstadt, approx. 55 km

Today's stage of your cycle tour on the North Sea Cycle Route takes you through Dithmarschen from Jutland to Brunsbüttel. There you reach the Kiel Canal. In operation since 1895, it is one of the busiest artificial waterways in the world. At the canal locks, you can watch small and large ships as they impressively pass through the canal. Your destination for the day, Glückstadt, was built in the 17th century according to sketches on the drawing board. A culinary specialty is the Glückstädter Matjes. Known beyond the borders of Schleswig-Holstein, it is traditionally made according to old recipes.

Old Town Glückstadt

Day 10: Glückstadt - Hamburg, approx. 55 km

Today you cycle along the Elbe towards your destination of Hamburg. In Wedel, you will come across the Willkomm-Höft ship welcoming station. Large ships entering or leaving the port of Hamburg are greeted or bid farewell with the Hamburg flag raised or lowered - including the national anthem of their home country. Once you arrive in Hamburg, there is plenty to see and discover. Take a boat trip through the port of Hamburg, stroll through the Speicherstadt warehouse district and watch the traders haggle at the legendary fish market.
