Our cyling vacation on Funen takes you to Denmark‘s third largest island. Lush flora and fauna, unspoilt beaches, wooded landscapes and blossoming orchards have earned Funen the reputation of Denmark‘s garden. The starting point of our cycling vacation on Funen is Odense, the birthplace of probably the most famous Dane – the writer Hans Christian Andersen – exudes something fairytale-like. He is commemorated in many places in the city, but also on the island. The tour continues to the south of Funen. Around Fåborg the terrain becomes hillier, but don‘t worry, the
highest elevation in the Funen Alps is a maximum of 128 metres. You continue to the lively harbour town of Svendborg and the island of Tåsinge. Another highlight of our cyling vacation on Funen is a trip to the island of Ærø in the middle of the Danish South Sea. Along the Great Belt you cycle close to the coast to the harbour towns of Nyborg and Kerteminde and return to Odense with numerous impressions. The island of Funen will surprise you – here and there you will discover romantic castles and spacious manor houses, charming coastal villages and thatched farms, Stone Age megalithic tombs and exciting evidence of the Vikings – your cyling vacation on Funen could not be more exciting.
Your cycling vacation on Fuenen begins at the heart of the island in Odense. Denmark's third largest city offers a variety of sights and experiences. Just take your bike and explore right after you've check-in to your hotel. Especially recommended is the Hans-Christian-Andersen museum offering an insight to the life and works of the most famous danish fairy tale writer.
Once you have left Odense behind, your round trip on Funen takes you to the sea. Just before you reach your destination of the day, Fåborg, you need to pedal a little harder. Near Svanninge, you will come across the foothills of the Funen Alps. The strikingly hilly landscape offers magnificent views over the south of Funen. You'll also pass Fåborg's landmark, the bell tower Klokketårnet. Take a stroll through the cozy town and discover the Ymerbrønd fountain which depicts the creation story of Norse mythology.
You cycle briskly to your destination for the day, Svendborg. If you want to spend some more time on your bike, take a detour to Tåsinge. The island's main attraction is the Valdemars Slot right by the sea. It provides an insight into the state rooms and displays all kinds of curiosities. If you want to get to know Svendborg better, pay a visit to the Naturama . Technology and nature enthusiasts, both adults and children, are introduced to the animal world of Denmark and Northern Europe on three different levels. Spend the night in Svendborg or in the small shipping village of Troense on the island of Tåsinge.
Today you set sail from Svendborg for the Danish South Sea. On a ferry trip (included), you will get to know the island world south of Funen, known for its shallow waters. You will reach the island of Ærø, one of the most beautiful islands in Denmark. From Ærøskøbing you have the option of cycling the whole island or just part of it - whichever you prefer. Cycle around the island, get to know the harbor town of Marstal, meet the Skjoldnæs lighthouse near Søby and discover the many small colorful bathhouses along the way, which are among the island's landmarks. From Ærøskøbing, take the ferry back to Svendborg.
Following the course of the Østersøruten, the Danish Baltic Sea Cycle Route, you cycle north on your circular tour on Funen today. Along the way, you will enjoy endless views of the sea and the Great Belt Bridge as well as numerous beaches that provide a refreshing rest. Denmark's oldest royal castle awaits you at your destination for the day, Nyborg. The Nyborg Slot served as the residence of Danish kings for several centuries. Not far from the castle is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city – Mads Lerches Gård, a former merchant's estate.
The bike path first takes you to Kerteminde. Here you could visit the marine research center Fjord & Bælt. Explore the sea ecosystem and get up close and personal with porpoises and seals.
It is worth making a detour to Ladbyskibet, the only burial ship from the Viking Age in Denmark. Your round trip on Funen ends in Odense. Here you can take a boat trip on the Odense Å, a city tour with a difference.
