Welcome to the journey by bike and ship through Friesland!
Located in the northwest of the Netherlands, the province with its offshore mudflat islands is ideal for an eventful and at the same time relaxing cycling tour. The starting point and destination is Enkhuizen. Your floating hotel will take you across the IJsselmeer, the largest lake in the Netherlands. Once in Friesland, a varied landscape awaits you, dotted with numerous lakes, wide meadows and fields, canals and marshes. Likewise, on the journey by bike and boat through Friesland, you will get to know some of the 11 Frisian towns, which, although often quite small, are of particular historical importance. These include Stavoren, for example, which greets you with a lady looking into the distance, or Leeuwarden, whose leaning church tower is a real eye-catcher. Island feeling comes with a visit to Terschelling. The West Frisian island awaits you with a long sandy beach and a wide variety of landscapes.
You are on the trip with bike and ship through Friesland every day individually at your pace and if you do not want to cycle once, that‘s no problem, then just stay on board.
Your round trip by bike and boat in Friesland begins in the tranquil town of Enkhuizen. The crew of your ship will welcome you in the afternoon. After the welcome, you set off - you leave Enkhuizen and cross the IJsselmeer towards Friesland. Stavoren is your destination for the day. As soon as you arrive, visit the landmark at the harbor - the statue of the Vrouwe van Stavoren. Learn about the legend surrounding her on the spot. Or how about a first bike tour through the town?
You cycle northwards on your first stage near the IJsselmeer coast with virtually no inclines. A first stopover in Hindeloopen is worthwhile on the way. Pretty gabled houses, wooden bridges and the harbor give this small town a very special atmosphere. Continue via Workum, which is also well worth a visit, to Makkum, where you will spend the night today. Visit the Koninklijke Tichelaar, the oldest earthenware factory in the Netherlands, or relax on the sandy beach.
In the morning, we pass through locks onto the Wadden Sea. The crossing to the island of Terschelling takes around four hours. Enjoy the crossing to the second largest of the West Frisian Islands and let the North Sea wind blow around your nose. With a bit of luck, you may spot seals along the way. On Terschelling, you will then have plenty of time to go on a discovery tour. Cycle to the miles of sandy beach, pay a visit to the Brandaris lighthouse and sample the island's cranberry products.
Early in the morning, you take the boat back to the mainland. The port city of Harlingen is your first destination. Take a stroll through the canal-lined city center before getting on your bike and heading east and inland. Your first destination is Franeker. Visit the Eisinga Planetarium. It dates back to the 18th century and is the oldest functioning planetarium in the world. Cycle on to Leeuwarden, the capital of Friesland. The leaning De Oldehove - the city's landmark - will immediately catch your eye.
On today's stage of your journey by bike and boat through Friesland, you will first cycle to De Alde Feanen National Park. The area is characterized by moors, swamp forests, heathland and water areas and is perfect for discovering plants, observing animals and simply enjoying the view. The route takes you past fields and meadows to your destination for the day, Grou, with virtually no inclines. The town is a center of Dutch water sports.
From tranquil Grou, you cycle through vast landscapes on quiet cycle paths to Sneek. The second-largest town in Friesland has the largest marina in the country and is very popular with water sports enthusiasts. Stroll through the picturesque Waterpoort, a water gate from the 17th century. It is the only one of its kind in the Netherlands. Also worth a visit is the Friesian Maritime Museum, which gives you an insight into the history of shipping in Friesland.
The last stage of your journey by bike and boat through Friesland takes you back to Stavoren. On the way, you can make a stopover in Heeg. Thanks to its location, this small, charming town once had good trade relations with other Frisian towns. The lively trade in eel also extended far beyond the national border to London. Once you arrive in Stavoren, you can explore the harbor again. Don't the colorful houses remind you a little of the harbor in Copenhagen? Take the boat back to Enkhuizen.
