It's worth taking a cycling tour in Portugal. Because the section between Porto and Lisbon is a particularly beautiful spot in Europe. Not only will you get to know the vibrant cities of Porto and Lisbon, but you can also interrupt your cycling stages at any time on picturesque coastal paths to take a break on one of the countless sandy beaches and gaze out over the wild Atlantic Ocean. Freshly caught fish, port wine and cherry liqueur round off the relaxed atmosphere perfectly. Could life be any better? The fabulous nature on the cycling tour in Portugal is not stingy with its charms: pine forests, cork oaks, shifting sand dunes, silvery glistening waters and golden sandy beaches lie along the routes. The history of the former seafaring nation, the fascinating cultural monuments and the great contrasts of this small country will inspire you on your cycling tour in Portugal. The first stages are flat, after which it becomes increasingly hilly.
On arrival in Porto, the adventure of a cycling tour in Portugal can begin! After checking into your hotel, hop on your bike and discover the lively city with its colorful facades and numerous sights. In the evening, take a stroll along the banks of the Douro and try a glass of port wine from the Alto Douro region, the oldest wine-growing region in the world.
Today you leave Porto behind you and set off on the first stage of your cycling tour in Portugal. Not far from the Atlantic coast, you head south through pine forests and seaside resorts. You set course for Furadouro, a popular surfing hotspot. The beaches here are miles long. The local fishermen of Furadouro still work according to time-honored traditions and pull mussels, sardines and crabs ashore in nets. You should enjoy a freshly caught fish or the stockfish that is so popular in Portugal for dinner.
You first cycle along the inland lakes of the Dunas de São Jacinto nature reserve. The nature park is a coastal area with fixed dunes and shifting sand dunes, pine forests and freshwater ponds – a paradise for many bird species. A ferry ride takes you to Aveiro. There you will be amazed by the many canals and the colorfully painted wooden ships. Take a short trip on a moliceiro, which are used to collect seaweed, and watch the hustle and bustle of Aveiro from the water.
The route first takes you along the Ria de Aveiro, a water landscape, to Costa Nova. Take a break on the beautiful beach of the fishing village before continuing south. You will soon reach Praia de Mira, your destination for the day. A fine sandy beach awaits you here too. In the evening, enjoy freshly caught fish in one of the small restaurants and the seemingly endless view of the sea.
You cycle through a gently undulating dune landscape and past pine forests to Cabo Mondego with its square lighthouse not far from the Atlantic. Today's stage of your cycle tour in Portugal continues to Figueira da Foz. The town's beach is famous throughout the country. And rightly so: its width and special light conditions gave it the name Praia da Claridade – beach of brightness.
In the morning, a transfer takes you to Sintra. The city has a very special flair thanks to its centuries-old palaces, villas and gardens. The city's landmark is the Palácio Nacional de Sintra, a former royal palace. Its white, conical chimneys immediately catch your eye. Continue towards the coast. Magnificent views of the sea accompany you to Cascais, your destination for today.
Today's cycle tour takes you to Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. Situated on seven hills, the city will delight you with its cozy squares, small alleyways, lovely parks, beautiful churches, historic buildings and its riverbanks. Visit the Belém Tower, which welcomes approaching ships to the harbor. Or how about a visit to the Castelo de São Jorge, from whose viewing platform you have a wonderful view of the Tagus?
