This cycle tour in Holstein Switzerland leads you mostly along the coast from Lübeck to Heiligenhafen. You also explore the wonderful countryside further inland. The region here is surprisingly hilly, which is why it is often called Holstein Switzerland. Small forest areas and fields crisscrossed by Knicks (the name of the old hedges here) are very characteristic of the region, as are the many lakes, waterside meadows and rivers. You visit Eutin – Weimar of the North and the small town of Plön. A boat trip on Greater Plön Lake is a must. Enjoy the final part of your tour as you leave the inland countryside and feel the fresh breeze of the beautifully sandy beaches of Lübeck Bay.
The historic and splendid Hanseatic city of Lübeck was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, and its charm is evident at every turn. While many associate Lübeck with the iconic Holsten Gate, marzipan, and the renowned author Thomas Mann, the city offers so much more. Visitors can explore its charming crooked brick houses, winding alleyways, and picturesque courtyards, as well as the impressive town hall. There's also something particularly delightful about enjoying a fish sandwich by the Trave at sunset.
The first stage of your cycle tour in Holstein Switzerland follows the coast of the Baltic Sea. Today's route offers you breathtaking views of the Bay of Lübeck at every turn. Later on you will pass the charming seaside resort of Timmendorfer Strand. Continue on to Germany's oldest lighthouse in Travemünde. Here you've reached the halfway mark of today's journey. So it is time to for a break explore the city or continue on to the well known Timmendorfer strand. Your route continues along the coastline until you reach today's destination – the harbour town of Neustadt in Holstein. Its harbour is located at a notch almost fjord-like, complete with a pagoda-style warehouse and a delightful historic old town which you should definitly explore.
Today, you cycle along the Bay of Lübeck to the seaside resort of Grömitz, renowned for its 400-metre-long pier. From here, you can enjoy stunning views of the 8-kilometre-long sandy beach. Continuing past Großenbrode, the gateway to the island of Fehmarn, you will reach your destination for the day, Heiligenhafen. The charming old town and the impressive salt warehouse are both well worth a leisurely stroll.
Leaving the Baltic Sea coast behind, to venture into the heart of Holstein Switzerland. The landscape changes- you'll encounter numerous lakes, rolling hills, and expansive deciduous forests. Scattered throughout are charming old manor houses, windmills, and historic towns.

From Eutin you bike journey leads you to the quaint town of Plön. It is home to an impressive, significant Renaissance castle. The town is surrounded by 16 lakes, including the expansive Großer Plöner See.
