Are you looking for a sporty idea for a long weekend or a short holiday in the north of Germany? Our suggestion: a bike tour along the Kiel Canal! Inaugurated in 1895, the canal is one of the busiest waterways in the world. It connects Brunsbüttel on the Elbe with Kiel on the Baltic Sea over a distance of around one hundred kilometres. Our bike tour along the Kiel Canal starts in Hamburg. Accompanied by the Elbe, you will travel via the matjes town of Glückstadt to Brunsbüttel. Marvel at the Kiel Canal locks there and learn more about the history and function of the canal in the adjacent lock museum. The longest section of our bike tour along the Kiel Canal takes you to Kiel. Lined by changing landscapes, populated with high bridges and ferry piers as well as container and cruise ships gliding across the canal, you will be travelling almost without climbing and mostly not far from the canal bank. In Kiel, enjoy the maritime flair on the harbour promenade and on the beaches along the Kiel Fjord and look back on a brisk and eventful
short trip.
Your bike tour along the North- East Canal begins leisurely in Hamburg. It is Germany's second largest city and has a lot to offer. Visit the fish market, the old housing disctict known as Speicherstadt, the Elbphilharmonie and the famous Michel. The hanseatic city delights in all its facetts with its mix of modern and historic buildings, its maritime Charme and vivacius liveliness. Get in the vacation mood with a leisurely walk along the Alster river or take a round tour by boat and look forward to exploring more on your bike tour along the Kiel Canal.
Today, you embark on the first stage of your cycle tour along the Kiel Canal. Following the Elbe, you will pass the ship welcoming facility in Wedel, where ocean liners and cruise ships arriving or departing the port of Hamburg are greeted or bid farewell with their national flags. Enjoy a leisurely ride to Glückstadt, a town founded nearly 400 years ago according to a carefully planned design. Treat yourself to a serving of the renowned Glückstädter Matjes, a local delicacy, before continuing your relaxed journey to your day's destination. In Brunsbüttel, the Kiel Canal begins, where you can witness the impressive canal locks that allow both small and large ships to shorten their route to the Baltic Sea.
Today, you will experience the full length of the Kiel Canal, an impressive waterway built at the end of the 19th century, as you cycle along its route. Pedal briskly across bridges, past ferry docks, while regularly encountering huge container ships and ocean-going cruise liners – a truly impressive sight! Take a break in Rendsburg to explore the charming old quarter and its remarkable railroad bride. Just follow the blue line- the marked path guides you to all the city's attractions.
Your journey concludes in Kiel, the state capital of Schleswig-Holstein. Relax on one of the beaches along the Kiel Fjord, or enjoy an evening stroll along the picturesque Kiellinie promenade.
