Travel report: Cycling in the valley of the young Danube

From our guests Markus, Uli and their Westie Lilly

Travelogue, In the valley of the young Danube

We traveled by car and our own bikes to the Hotel Waldblick in Donaueschingen, where we then cycled around the town to visit the source of the Danube. Afterwards, we took the car to the Rhine Falls in Switzerland, as the short distance made it a good idea.

On day 1, we cycled 50 km

After breakfast at the Hotel Waldblick, we set off through a strikingly green landscape and a short visit to the Entenburg hunting lodge, cycling many kilometers along the Danube in fine weather. We reached our destination for the day at the Jägerhaus guesthouse. For us, this was the highlight of the tour with incredible views, the sound of the Danube, a room with a bed on the balcony and a very friendly hostess.

On day 2, we cycled 55 km from Fridingen to Sigmaringen/Scheer

After a wonderful night on the balcony and a good breakfast, we set off again in good weather through the many rocky landscapes with plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the fantastic views. In Sigmaringen, we used our vouchers to visit the castle with a guided tour, which is definitely worth doing, and the suspension rope bridge was also a cool attraction. Then a little way to Scheer to the Hotel Donaublick with modern rooms and the very good restaurant opposite, where we ended the day.

On day 3 we went from Sigmaringen/Scheer to Ehingen 70km

The longest stage unfortunately began after a large breakfast buffet with drizzle, which accompanied us for the next few days, several stops and good rainwear were necessary here. You can take the train at any time, which we had to do from Riedlingen to Ehingen due to heavy rain. Nevertheless, cycling part of the route was a great experience, as anyone can cycle in good weather. In Ehingen, we checked into the Ochsen and reserved a table in the restaurant for the evening. The little town is a great place for a stroll, with everything in the immediate vicinity. The Swabian food at the Ochsen in the evening was delicious.

On day 4, we cycled 60 km from Ehingen to Ulm

After a good breakfast, we set off in the direction of Blaubeuren. There is a cave system right next to the cycle path, which was very interesting. The cycle path always runs beautifully along the Danube, mostly right next to the river. When we arrived in Ulm, we parked our bikes at the hotel by the town hall in the city center, checked in and then went shopping straight away. We visited Ulm Minster with the vouchers and found everything we needed in the center.

On day 5, we cycled 50 km from Ulm to Dillingen

After a hearty breakfast in the Biedermeier room, we headed towards Dillingen in drizzling rain, again right next to the Danube to Günzburg, where we visited Legoland, which was really cool. Once we arrived in Dillingen at the Hotel Kannenkeller, a little exhausted by the weather, we had a delicious pizza and salad.

On day 6, we cycled 40 km from Dillingen to Donauwörth

We started the last stage in glorious weather. In Dillingen, we visited the castle and took a Kneipp bath. On this stage, it is much nicer to take the unsurfaced, but always easily passable cycle path right next to the Danube. Once again great natural landscapes at the end. Once we arrived in Donauwörth, we checked into the Donau Hotel with its cool rooms, then visited the Käthe Kruse Museum and enjoyed typical Swabian cuisine at the Goldener Hirsch in the town.

Conclusion:

Another very successful cycle tour despite the occasional bad weather, many cycle paths directly on the Danube. The luggage always worked out and our dog was no problem in the hotels. Top value for money! Always happy to return.
