The Mur Cycle Route is accompanied by gentle mountains, wide alpine pastures, occasional bathing lakes and the changing river landscape of the Mur. You cycle from Salzburg's Lungau region via the provincial capital of Graz to southern Styria on the border with Slovenia – always slightly downhill! Taste the regional pumpkin seed oil, a fresh apple or a glass of wine in Mediterranean southern Styria. Take a break at one of the many rustic wine taverns along the way. You cycle along the well-maintained Mur Cycle Route into the Mediterranean landscape, which is characterized by orchards, green fields and the occasional towering castle. Where the mountains give way and the valleys widen, you reach the southernmost point of Styria, Bad Radkersburg. The town with its hot springs is the ideal destination for your cycle tour on the Mur Cycle Route.
You start your bike tour on the Mur Cycle Route in Salzburg's Lungau region. Idyllic St. Michael is surrounded by the high peaks of the Radstädter Tauern, Obertauern and Nockberge. The small town will get you in the perfect mood for your cycling vacation. Visit the parish church of St. Michael, where a church already stood in the 9th century. The parish church as it can be seen today was consecrated around 1513.
You cycle along the Mur Cycle Route through the romantic river valley. Framed by high mountains, the Mur takes you past flower-filled farms and small chapels. The town of Tamsweg offers you the perfect opportunity for a break. The historic market square with its colorful houses is a must-see! You cycle along the river to the beer and timber town of Murau. Imposing wooden buildings, such as the Mursteg, which connects two parts of the town, give the town its name. Visit the brewery museum and enjoy a glass of home-brewed Murauer beer.
Leaving the wooden town behind you, you follow hilly paths through green, flower-filled nature. The Mur meanders along close to the mighty rock faces. The Mur Cycle Route takes you right past Sauerbrunn Castle with its Sternschanze. Built in the 15th century, the castle is home to a total of 12 healing springs, which are the most famous healing waters in Styria! The Sternschanze is an impressive building whose function is still unclear today. In Judenburg, you should definitely climb the 75-metre-high town tower, which offers a fabulous view of the town and the hilly surrounding countryside!
Past the Maria Buch pilgrimage church – one of the oldest churches in Styria – the Mur Cycle Route leads you through small, densely overgrown sections of forest. From here you can see the Gulsenberg. This is a nature reserve due to its flora and fauna. The special plant of the serpentine houseleek grows only there. In Loeben, we recommend getting off your bike to explore the historic old town by foot. The red Hacklhaus has the most important baroque facade in the city and is decorated with facade ornamentation dating back to 1660.
You follow the Mur past old orchards and high rock faces through blossoming nature. Plan a rest stop in Frohnleiten. Baroque town houses in various colors make up the picturesque town. Cycle on energetically, the valley widens and you can already see the high Schlossberg from afar – you are in Graz. The Schlossberg with the Clock Tower, the landmark of Graz, forms the heart of the old town. Take the Schlossbergbahn up to the top and experience the magical charm above the rooftops of the provincial capital.
Leaving the hustle and bustle of the city behind you, you follow the tranquil Mühlgang river on the Mur Cycle Route into the vast countryside. The reed-covered river leads you through the green fields. Past small farms offering regional delicacies and with breathtaking views of the high, wooded mountains. There's no mistaking that you're in the wine region of Styria! On your bike, the Mur Cycle Route takes you past overgrown winegrowers' houses and vines. You will soon have reached Leibnitz, your destination for today's stage. Visit Seggau Castle, which has one of the most important collections of Roman stones in Europe. The 300-year-old wine cellar houses some fine wines!
Today you get on your bike for the last time and cycle leisurely along the Mur. The river soon serves as a natural border to neighboring Slovenia. Take a break in Mureck and visit the Mureck Ship Mill. Thanks to the power of the Mur, organic grain is milled daily using stone grinders – in a completely natural way! If you want to make the most of the last day of your cycle tour, the Röcksee is the perfect place for a swim. It is located directly on the route. Bad Radkersburg is a town with a southern flair: the houses in the old town are lined up close together and tell stories of the past through paintings.
