The Moselle rises in the Vosges Mountains and makes its way through northeastern France to its mouth on the Rhine in Coblenz. Our bike tour starts in the heart of Lorraine, in Nancy. From there you will follow the Moselle, as the Moselle is called in French, to Pont-à-Mousson and Metz. Impressed by the Saint-Étienne Cathedral and the city‘s diverse art scene, the tour continues to the border triangle of Germany, France and Luxembourg. From Perl, you will cycle through the German Moselle Valley, which is lined with vineyards. You will follow the typical Moselle loops and experience a region that was settled by the Romans more than 2000 years ago and has left a lasting impression. Especially in Treves, this is noticeable in many corners of the city. However, the Romans not only left behind interesting buildings, but also ensured that the Moselle developed into a traditional wine-growing region. On our bike tour from Lorraine you will get to know small wine-growing villages, picturesque half-timbered towns and majestic castles. On top of that, you will enjoy excellent wines, which you can taste to your heart‘s content along the way. Speaking of enjoyment: Culinary our bike tour from Lorraine is rounded off by the exquisite French and the hearty Rhineland-Palatinate cuisine.
Your bike tour along the Moselle begins in Nancy, the former capital of the Dukes of Lorraine. Nancy boasts a historic old town that captivates with its blend of architectural styles from various periods. Of particular note is the neoclassical Place Stanislas, renowned for its gilded wrought-iron railings and splendid fountains. It is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. During your visit, be sure to sample some of the city's renowned specialities, including bergamot sweets, macarons, and baba au rhum. Bon appétit!
You will follow the course of the Meurthe River, which converges with the Moselle at Custines. Continuing along the winding path of the Moselle, you will arrive at Pont-à-Mousson. The town takes its name from one of the few bridges that spanned the Moselle in earlier times, with "Pont-à-Mousson" translating to "Bridge at Mousson."
The castle perched above the town used to be a strategic stonghold to controll the Moselle during the Middle Ages. It now lies in ruins. Still a leisurely walk up to the castle will reward you with stunning views of the village and the picturesque Moselle valley below.
