Discover the beautiful landscape of Germany‘s oldest wine-growing region on your cycle tour along the Moselle. The cycle path meanders along the banks of the river as winding as the river itself. Starting in Metz in France, you cycle relaxed into the border triangle of France, Luxembourg and Germany. You cycle leisurely past lush green vineyards and through numerous small towns with picturesque half-timbered houses. You will be delighted by the warm hospitality of the locals in the well-known wine-growing villages of Neumagen-Dhron and Piesport. Stop off at a wine tavern and sample the fine wines and culinary specialties of the region. Even the Romans appreciated the privileged location of the area and built their settlements. Explore and marvel at the numerous contemporary witnesses in Perl, Trier, Mehring and Koblenz. Look forward to an exciting cycle tour along the Moselle that won‘t leave you bored.
Plan your journey to Metz well in advance. The capital of Lorraine offers visitors numerous sights. Every era of the city's 2000-year history has left its mark. On your tour, admire Saint-Etienne Cathedral with its 42-metre-high nave and the German Gate, the imposing remains of the city fortifications from the Middle Ages. After your walk, relax in one of the parks with a typical French café au lait.
Today you can decide how long your first cycling stage should be. Do you want to take it a little easier? Then take the train from Metz to Thionville for the first few kilometers (not included). Alternatively, you can really get pedaling and cycle along the French banks of the Moselle. Treat yourself to a break along the way and indulge in the delicious French cuisine. Recharge your batteries and cycle along the well-maintained cycle paths to your stage destination of Perl. The wine-growing community is idyllically situated in the border triangle of Germany, Luxembourg and France.
Before you set off on the next stage of your cycle tour along the Moselle, it is worth making a detour to Villa Borg. Experience and feel Roman history up close in the gardens and tavern. Then continue cycling at a leisurely pace and enjoy the view of the vineyards that accompany you on both sides of the riverbank. You will soon reach Treves, the oldest city in Germany. Take plenty of time to visit the numerous sights. The Porta Nigra, the amphitheatre and the Imperial Baths are just some of the highlights that you should not miss out on.
Wine and the Romans also accompany you on today's stage. Visit the Villa Rustica in Mehring, a replica of a Roman country house. In Piesport, you will find an old Roman wine press where you can experience the earlier techniques of wine production. There are also numerous idyllic wine villages along the way, such as Mehring, Neumagen-Dhron and, last but not least, Piesport, the largest wine-growing community on the Moselle. Sample a good drop of wine and a typical Dibbelabbes in one of the many wine taverns.
Simple as the Moselle itself, you cycle along the numerous meanders. A first stop is worthwhile in Bernkastel-Kues. The famous little town looks like something out of a picture book. Medieval half-timbered houses and the historic market square are certainly the main attractions. You cycle through Kröv with its famous vineyard Kröver Nacktarsch and soon reach your stage destination. Traben-Trarbach is a place full of flair thanks to its Art Nouveau and Belle Epoque architectural treasures. The best way to enjoy this unique view is on a wonderful boat trip (not included).
Discover the pretty town of Enkirch with its numerous half-timbered houses on your cycle tour along the Moselle today. You then cycle around the Zeller Hamm, a narrow Moselle bend, and past Bullay, the former Free Imperial City. The romantic Arras Castle, built on a hilltop, sits enthroned on the opposite bank of the Moselle. The former imperial castle complex is now home to the only castle hotel on the Moselle. You can see the Reichsburg, the landmark of the town of Cochem, from afar. The climb is worth it, as you will be rewarded with a unique view over the town and the Moselle.
Castles line the route of today's stage. Decide for yourself which one you want to make a detour to in order to enjoy the magnificent view over the valley and take a souvenir photo. Cycle on at a leisurely pace and follow the Moselle to the Deutsches Eck, where it flows into the Rhine. If you've always wanted to get up high, we recommend taking the cable car across the Rhine up to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. From there you can enjoy a breathtaking view over Koblenz. Afterwards, treat yourself to dinner on the riverside promenade with a view of the river.
