Our Moselle cycling holiday is perfect for wine lovers and those who want to become one. Germany's oldest wine region produces excellent wines that are known far beyond the Moselle region. Whether sparkling Riesling or refreshing Elbling, our Moselle cycling holiday will delight you. But our Moselle cycling holiday has even more to offer, much more. Over the course of 12 days, you will cycle almost without any inclines through a region that was settled and shaped by the Romans. Whether it is the cultivated winegrowing or numerous architectural witnesses such as the Roman Villa Borg in Perl, the Porta Nigra in Trier, the Neumagen Wine Ship, the half-timbered town of Bernkastel-Kues or the Cochem Imperial Castle - our Moselle cycling holiday takes you along a river that looks back on more than 2000 years of cultural history. Excursions to the wine town of Saarburg, the brewery town of Bitburg in the southern Eifel, the Kyll Valley and the volcanic Eifel around Daun and Kelberg round off our Moselle cycling holiday perfectly. Other highlights include a visit to the impressive Eltz Castle, one of the most beautiful castles in Germany, and a Rhine boat trip to St. Goarshausen to the legendary Loreley Rock. The destination of our Moselle cycling holiday is Koblenz at the Deutsches Eck, where the Moselle flows into the Rhine.
Your great Moselle cycling holiday begins in the border triangle of Germany, France and Luxembourg. After checking in at the hotel, grab your bike and explore your starting point of Perl. The Roman Villa Borg takes you back to the time of the Romans and their everyday life. Traces of the Romans are also visible in the district of Nennig. There you will find the remains of another Roman villa with impressive floor mosaics. In Saarland's only wine-growing community, you will find many wine taverns that invite you to stop and enjoy an Elbling or Pinot Gris.
On the first stage of your Moselle cycling holiday, you follow the course of the Moselle, which serves as the border river to Luxembourg as far as Wasserbillig. Via Konz you reach Trier, the oldest city in Germany. Trier's landmark is the Porta Nigra, the Black Gate. It is the ideal starting point for an extensive tour of the city. Visit the Imperial Baths, Trier Cathedral, the amphitheater and the Roman Bridge. Or how about a walk along the wine culture trail? It shows you the history and cultivation of wine at every turn.
Today you first follow the Upper Moselle and the Saar. Your excursion destination Saarburg looks back on more than 1000 years of history. Part of this history is the castle ruins above the town. It is one of the oldest hilltop castles in western Germany. From the viewing platforms, you have a wonderful view over the Saar valley. At the heart of Saarburg is a 20-metre-high waterfall, the sound of which can be heard from afar. It was created in the Middle Ages to use water power to drive mill wheels. You cycle back to Trier via Tawern and Konz.
Today we travel by train to Bitburg in the southern Eifel region. The town, which is best known for its traditional brewery, was already developed into a roadside fort by the Romans. Remains of the old town wall still remind us of this today. You cycle back to Trier mainly through the wild and romantic Kyll valley. You are on the Kyll cycle path, which takes you through orchards and floodplain landscapes without much effort. You reach the Moselle in Ehrang. Trier is now only a few kilometers away.
On today's stage of your Moselle cycling hoilday, you will cycle along the Moselle framed by vineyards and through some of the most beautiful wine-growing villages. Neumagen-Dhron is the oldest wine-growing community in Germany. Even the Romans appreciated the favorable location on the Moselle. The Neumagen wine ship still bears witness to this today. Sample one of the fine wines from the Piesporter Goldtröpfchen vineyard in nearby Piesport before strolling through the old town with its countless half-timbered houses in your destination for the day, Bernkastel-Kues.
Today's cycling day on your Moselle cycling holiday begins with a ride on the cycle bus. It will take you to Daun. The Kneipp spa town is located in the middle of the volcanic Eifel, which is characterized by typical maars (volcanic lakes). Visit the Eifel Volcano Museum in the town center. It focuses on the exciting history of volcanism. On the Maare-Moselle cycle path, one of the most beautiful railroad cycle paths in Germany, you return to the Moselle via Wittlich.
Accompanied by countless vineyards, your Moselle cycling holidayfirst takes you to Traben-Trarbach. With its many half-timbered houses and charming Art Nouveau villas, the town boasts one of the most beautiful riverside promenades on the Moselle. On we go! At Zell you reach the narrowest loop of the Moselle. With over four million vines, Zell is one of the largest wine-growing towns in Germany. The Schwarze Katz vineyard stands out in particular - try a tangy Riesling before you reach the winegrowing village of Bullay, your overnight stop for the night.
In the morning, the RadBus (a special bus for cyclists) takes you to Kelberg in the Volcanic Eifel. On the way back, you will pass the Mosbrucher Weiher. In the middle of the almost circular dry moor is a fen that serves as a habitat for rare plants and animals. The area can be explored via footbridges. There are a few climbs along the way, which are made up for by the views of the surrounding area. A short stop in Bad Bertrich is worthwhile. The spa town has the only Glauber's salt thermal baths in Germany. It is now only a few kilometers to Bullay.
Leave Bullay and follow the meanders of the Moselle. It is worth taking a first break in Beilstein. The municipality is often referred to as the Rothenburg on the Moselle due to its historic townscape. Beilstein is dominated by the ruins of Metternich Castle. Back on the bike, the route continues to Cochem. The impressive Cochem Imperial Castle, which is more than 1000 years old, will catch your eye from afar. The Cochem chairlift takes you high up to the Pinnerkreuz - including magnificent views of the Moselle! In Treis-Karden, your destination for the day, the Mosel Cathedral dominates the town center.
Shortly after the start of today's stage of your Moselle cycling holiday, you head to Eltz Castle, which is well worth seeing, a little away from the river. Situated on a slate cliff top, the castle impresses with its numerous gables, oriels and towers. The interior of the castle provides an insight into the living culture of the nobility and displays numerous art treasures. At your destination for the day, Koblenz, the Moselle flows into the Rhine at the Deutsches Eck. The Ehrenbreitenstein fortress is particularly worth seeing. The second largest preserved fortress in Europe can be reached by cable car across the Rhine.
Today you will get to know the Middle Rhine. Take the boat to St. Goarshausen. Visit the pretty old town of the village. The Loreley Rock is just a stone's throw away. It is over 130 meters high and became famous through the legend of the beautiful maiden Loreley. She is said to have lured passing sailors to their doom with her song. You cycle back to Koblenz via Boppard. On the way, you will pass castles and palaces towering over the Rhine valley.
